The Surprises Just Never Stop...

As much as I wish that they would.  The fact is with any amount of children you just have no idea what they might try next.  No matter how predictable your child may be, I have no doubt they have either said or done something that surprised you.  And those of us with kids that are constantly coming up with new and "exciting" ideas, you'd think we'd have seen and heard it all, but no the surprises just keep on a comin'.

This time around Emma-Lyn tried out her show stopping technique of swinging from the living room curtains...Too bad the curtain rod couldn't carry her weight and popped right off the wall.  No worries though, the couch caught Emma-Lyn's fall, my curtains on the other hand are gonners.  (not that I'm all that broken up about it, they were the ones that came with the house and looked straight out of the 70s)  Then not to be outdone Nate decided he'd  stick his hand down the back of his poopy pull up and show Mommy the brown squishy stuff he found therein!!  YIPPEEEE!  I don't think I've ever grabbed a kid's hand and hauled them to a bathroom so fast!  Fun times to be sure!  Sean missed out on all of this as he was playing in his room the entire time...phew!

This past weekend we made a wintery visit to one of our favourite places Knox's Dam and Falls.  The kids love it here!  They enjoy finding things to throw in the water and watch go over the waterfall. I love the photo opportunities here.

Inspirartion From Reality TV

My husband and I enjoy some reality tv shows like Canada's Greatest Know It All and Canada's Handyman Challenge, but our favourite has to be The Amazing Race.  We love getting to know the different teams and seeing all the different countries they travel to as well as watch them struggle through road blocks and detours.  The 20th season just began yesterday and while we couldn't pick a team that we really liked, we did enjoy watching their last challenge which was to make 120 empanadas.  The empanadas looked so tasty!!  I knew when I saw them I just had to try them!  Ya gotta love the internet and its plethora of information and in this case recipes. I found a doable recipe and Marko and I set to work this afternoon making them for supper.  And here is the result:

They were ever so tasty and we were able to make some small ones that the kids enjoyed too.  I'm looking forward to making these again and trying some variations on the fillings!

Also today we went to town to check out a vacuum that a friend of mine was selling.  The one I have been using is slowly dying and making vacuuming a most drawn out and arduous chore!    So I was very excited to hear that a friend was selling hers and here it is:
She's pretty big and fairly heavy but I LOVE it!  It's not half as loud as my old Black Beast (the Dirt Devil we got when we got married) and it does such a great job and all of the attachments work!  I tried it out as soon as we got home and it was fantastic!   Sean and Emma-Lyn have been in charge of vacuuming the kitchen and the living room so we'll see what they think of it when they get their crack at it on Friday. :)

Our Valentine's Day Adventures and More...

We had a pretty busy Valentine's Day and it was a lot of fun.  In the morning we headed into Charlottetown for the Bible study which was great.  The kids got to decorate more sugar cookies and eat them.  After that we had a few errands to run.  We wanted to go to the Bulk Barn so the kiddos could pick out their own Valentine treats, then to Marks Workwarehouse in search of a present for Daddy and then to Value Village for cushions.

The kids love going to the Bulk Barn there is just so much to choose from.   Emma-Lyn picked out some tasty little jelly beans while Sean went with the classic Skittles and Nate decided to go for some Valentines themed Smarties. They  all just had to carry their own bag of goodies to the cashier.  We also picked up a little Bridge Mixture for Daddy to enjoy.  We walked to Marks from there and didn't have much luck so we piled back into the car to Value Village.

We found 3 identical pillows at VV and I was thrilled, but I wanted to be sure that it was a good price so I stuck them in the toy area in hopes that no one else would pick them up.  I hustled the children to the front of the store.  While we were making a bee line for the door Emma-Lyn informs me that she has to go pee.  I tell her it'll be okay and we just have to run to Fabricville and then we'll be back at VV.  I check the prices at Fabricville and indeed the cushions at VV are a much better deal so I scurry the children back out the door and into VV, specifically the toy section where I was happy to see my three cushions were awaiting my return.  I was so pleased I allowed the children a few minutes of play time with the toys.  Then Emma-Lyn looks up at me and piteously announces that she has just peed her pants.  Oh dear, why didn't I listen to her earlier.  I didn't have a change of pants on me and we had just made plans to go to McDonalds for lunch.  We walked down the girls aisle and found a really cute pair of jeans for only 1.99!  Great! We got them and the pillows and quickly got Emma-Lyn changed (thankfully I did have a change unders for her.)

The kids loved going to McDonald's for lunch.  I really enjoyed myself too, I met some new ladies and had a great conversation with them.  So fun to make new friends at McDonalds.  After lunch we headed home.  I was shocked at what I saw when I pulled in the driveway, not only did I forget to lock the front door but I also forgot to shut it!!  Gaaaaah.  Thankfully nothing happened while we were out but, man have to get my head screwed on a little tighter I think!! :)

We piled out the car and grabbed our container of cookies for our neighbour and headed over for a lovely little visit.  The kids love it because she gets cable and they got to watch a couple of their favourite programs.

The kids had their supper and were already for bed when Grammie Peric arrived and Marko and I were able to go out for some Chinese food.  Also we stopped into Buy-Rite for material for the cushions we just bought.  In case you're wondering, the cushions are for the children.  At bedtime now, all three of them are up (Nate used to go to bed early) so this makes prayer time and story time a little tricky as everyone would like to sit on someone's lap.  Our solution was to get each of them their own personalized cushion that they could sit on on the floor.  The kids LOVED the idea so this is what we were up to.

So, today Sean, Emma-Lyn and I tackled the project of making pillow covers for our cushions.

Here we are all set up and raring to go.

We made envelope pillow covers, so our first step was to press and pin our seams.  And here they are working away.

Next it was time to sew it together.  Look at that smile...and those bangs so long...Later I cut her bangs a cut and gave Nate's hair a trim.

 Love this shot.
And here is Emma-Lyn's finished project.  As far as sewing went she was in charge of pressing the foot pedal as I guided the material through the sewing machine.

 Sean getting started.

And I would say he LOVES the result! :)
And there we have all three cushions.  Not too shabby a job coming from someone who doesn't sew all that much and totally messed up Nate's cover the first time around.

Happy Valentine's Day!

For once I'm early with a post!!  Can you believe it?!

It was a blustering weekend we just enjoyed.  We got some rain, some snow, some freezing rain and some high winds!  Thankfully we didn't lose our power and enjoyed a quiet Sunday at home.  Marko and I played Risk with Sean.  It was Sean's idea and when he realized that its not as easy to win as playing Sorry or Aggravation he was ready to pack up his armies and send them home.  Later we all sat down and watched the movie Up.  What a cute movie, we all really enjoyed it.

Today we enjoyed some bird watching ,school time and baking and Valentine's crafts.  Tomorrow we have Bible study and then we hope to visit our neighbour and share our Valentine treats.

We mostly have Blue Jays come and visit us.  Sometimes we have Starlings and would you believe that we saw a Robin yesterday?!

And here is my happy Valentine cookie decorating crew.  You'll notice an empty spot...that was Nate's seat.  Instead of decorating the cookies, he ate them so that was the end of his job. :)

 Hard at work.

Very serious work to be done.

I just LOVE this shot because of that cute little brown eye peeking out at you!

 The masterpieces.

And the kiddos and their Valentine people.

Cookies, Yummy Cookies

Who doesn't love a good cookie now and then right?  I know I love cookies and so do the kiddos.  One of my favourite cookies is Fudgeeos! Yum!  Can't go wrong with chocolate cookie part and that scrumptious fudge filling.  Ya gotta twist the cookie apart and lick off the yummy filling!  Marko bought a box of Fudgeeos yesterday and we all enjoyed a couple for snack today.  So far, not a very interesting story, but wait there's more!!!  Later on in the day the kiddos were doing video games on my netbook and I decided to take some time and head upstairs and read my book.  And we all had a very delightful time, apparently some more than others.  As I came downstairs I saw Sean and Emma-Lyn using the netbook but no Nate, two more steps and I look into the kitchen and there he is, pleased as punch and covered in chocolatey goodness.  He had grabbed the entire bag of fudgeeos and systematically twisted each one apart and ate all the fillings!!! I couldn't believe it!  I laughed, and laughed.  The other two munchkins did not find this amusing as this meant that there wouldn't be any more cookies for snack...I still think its funny.

In other news I came across this book the other day:

Do you remember this book Uncle John and Aunt Gwen?  Its from quite awhile ago so if you don't remember I don't blame you.  But anyways, you guys gave it to me for Christmas 1980 (the only reason I know is because you signed it)  I'm reading this book to Emma-Lyn for school time. Anyways it reminded me of you guys which reminded me to get the family picture up:

Ta-Da  my aunties and uncles!!!  What a grand bunch!  From left to right is Auntie Fran, Uncle Johm, Auntie Gwen,  Aunt Mary-Jane, Uncle Barry, Aunt Karen and Uncle Max.  Love you all!!

And Today Was A Day...

Like No Other in Recent Memory...

Where to begin with this day...I got up a bit late, it was quarter to 7 by the time I sat down on the couch and then no sooner than  I had sat down than Nate was up--ugh and he was wet so I couldn't just put him right back to bed.  I changed him and then the two of us went downstairs together for a bit.

The plan today had been to go to Bible study here in town and then head out to a friend's place for a playdate out in New Dominion.  The kids were pretty excited about the day.  Then the weather happened.  Snow, snow, snow and more snow.  The Bible study was cancelled and when I heard that Holland College was closing I figured it was better to stay in Montague than to go traipsing across the Island.  That being said, I figured we'd be okay to head to the local Superstore and pick up a game set that Marko had mentioned and a new broom, then a quick stop into the Library would make for a nice enough outing...

Except that there were no more of those game sets left and that broom I was looking for was no where to be found in the Superstore.  Oh and the Library doesn't open till 12:30 and it was only 10:00...Bahhhhhhh.  So back home we go.   We have a snack of brownies and things seem to improve.   Before we had left earlier, I had been on a bit of a hunt to find some extra dry erase markers.  I thought I had seen a couple in the linen closet (you know, that place I organized yesterday?!)  I decided to finish my hunt and I pulled the whole closet apart and searched each box to find exactly 0 markers...So I put everything back and took some things out to the garage and even tried looking in there with no luck.  Oh well.  Once back in the house I decided we should at least give school work a bit of a go.  Sean and I didn't do so badly.  Got a few pages done when we heard some odd noises coming from upstairs.  I didn't think much of it and told Sean we would just keep plugging along.  He wasn't so convinced.  Good thing he wasn't.  I headed upstairs to find Nate "playing" in the bathroom.  He had opened up their new tube of toothpaste and was attempting to clean the sink and toilet with the toothpaste.  I was ever so pleased....UGH!!!  I got that cleaned up and I was fed up by this point with how the day was going so Sean and I wrapped things up and I attempted to get my laundry dealt with.   It is at this point that Nate decides that one blue couch is not enough and begins to mark on the beige couch with blue pen...AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!  I tried to clean this but with little to no success. I lost my cool and gave the kids what I'm sure was one of my best lectures...Bless Sean's heart he grabbed the basket of folded laundry and started distributing it to the appropriate rooms while reminding me to be self controlled....

Okay time for lunch!!!  We manage to get that down with no problems. I called the library to see if they were going to open in the afternoon and sure enough they were!  Yee HAW!  With lunch done I load the kids in the car and we make our way to the Library.  The roads were pretty slippery by this point so we took our time.  I have never been so happy to get to a library in my entire life!  It was like a little slice of heaven.  I found a couple of videos to watch and we all found a bunch of books to take home.  SUCCESS!! Now just to get home without sliding off the road.

Thankfully we made home in one piece.  Now to celebrate our VICTORY!!  I quickly got the kids inside and looking at their books while I popped popcorn and made hot chocolate with marshmellows and candy canes.  We popped in Kung Fu Panda and sat back and relaxed... Such a funny movie. The kids laughed hysterically and generally just enjoyed themselves.  I was still basking in the glow of victory. :)  Nate was covered in chocolate by the end of the movie so I opted to put him and Emma in the tub.  They were both mighty pleased about that...That is until Emma-Lyn pooped in the tub and then threw it on the floor. And for whatever reason Nate thought he should use both Marko and my shampoo all over his slippery little body!!!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!  I get that cleaned up and kids into pjs and head back downstairs to try and finish the laundry and put the pizza in the oven.

And that my friends, was my day...
