Day 59

It's my mom's birthday today and what better way to celebrate than post it on the ol' blog with an old picture of her and Levi.

I love my mom, she is amazing, funny and has an incredible zest for life.  She has beaten cancer twice, a brain tumour and numerous other obstacles that have come her way.  She loves her grand children and spoiling them with Smarties on every visit.  Can't wait to visit together again at Easter time.

Day 58

May I present to you the calendar that mocks me:

I mean, seriously?!  Grass in FEBRUARY?!! I have no stinking idea what it must be like to celebrate Valentine's day with grass on the ground but I bet it would be WONDERFUL!

While the snow is all pretty and white I'd love to see my green garden again!

Day 57

Just another school day. The kiddos worked in their books, we read some books, did our science experiment, completely spaced on Sean's curling lesson and built stuff.

Emma-Lyn and I built this igloo.

I think she's pleased!

In the meantime Levi pulled down our freshly planted morning glory and distributed the soil all over the kitchen floor as well as himself and even ate some of it. Yep, just a regular old school day.

Day 56

It was an interesting day today.  Sean woke up not feeling the best, with a sore throat and a mild headache.  The other three were doing pretty well but also seemed a little off.  We decided to keep things simple and have a good long read aloud time cuddled on the couch. We read poetry, science books, math stories and much more. Sean had me quiz him on his knowledge about his book Mighty Machines.  I have to say I was impressed with the amount of information Sean has retained.  He is following in his daddy's footsteps in becoming a walking and talking encyclopedia!

By 10 o'clock schools were announcing the cancellation of afternoon classes as the bad weather was making its way to the Island.  We decided to hit the library as soon as possible to avoid getting caught in yet another winter storm.  The kids enjoyed the change of pace and were delighted when a friend showed up too.

By the time we got home it was well past lunch time and everyone's tempers were beginning to flare.  We all felt better after having some sandwiches.  Emma-Lyn found another book to read about Roman numeral and we read that and she and I played some games to help her learn the numerals.  After that they watched some Magic School Bus.  Thankfully daddy came home early and we're all snug as bugs in a rug.

Mr. Levi trying out the mini trampoline.

Miss. Emma-Lyn and her Roman numerals.

Day 55

A busy but fun day.  This morning our homeschool group enjoyed a wonderful introduction to the world of step dance. They watched the instructor do some jigs and reels and even got to try out some steps themselves.  The instructor was amazing!  I'm hoping to get Sean and Emma-Lyn involved either next term or in the fall.

After our lunch we headed into town for a newborn photo shoot.  The kids enjoyed playing with the older siblings while Denise and I cooed over baby Abishai. Such a sweet and easy going little guy!

I chose this picture from the photoshoot just because of how sweet and protective their family dog is.  He came right up and cuddled up beside Abishai, gave him a lick on the head and settled right down beside him.

Day 54

During quiet time I decided to so a little sketching.  My wonderful friend, Denise took an amazing shot of her youngest son Ben that I really wanted to try to sketch.  Here's my efforts:

If you'd like to see the original click here. This is Denise's 365 project blog.  She's an amazing photographer so enjoying checking out the rest of her photos!

Day 53

As we were leaving for church this morning we noticed that we had a bit of a water leak happening in our entryway.  We didn't have time to stop and do much about it then but when we came back water was actively dripping from the ceiling.  We needed to get up on a ladder and get some of that snow off the roof.  Not only did we have a crap load of snow on the roof, it was sitting on a thick layer of ice. Marko and I took turns scraping with a rake and making little progress.  It was so discouraging.  We knew we needed to ask for help.  So off to Facebook I went to send out a plea for help.  We were thankful for folks who had advice and shared what they could via Facebook but it was beginning to look like we'd have to get this done on our own.  When lo and behold, this lovely couple gave us a call:
They are Doug and Tammy but we know them as the Ice Fighting Ninjas!  They came with tools and the most fantastic ladder that I've ever seen!  Marko and I couldn't be more thankful to have had them come and help us out. It was delightful to sit down and chat and sip Pepsi after all the hard work.

Day 52

What a super fun day we had today!!  The kids and I went to town this morning for a special Victorian Tea play date.  We all got dressed up and headed over to our friends the Beukert's house for tea and company.  It was delightful!  The table was laden with lovely mini cupcakes, lemon loaf, small pb&j sandwiches, a meat and cheese tray and jello and we brought some cookies and truffles.  There was tea and punch to drink. It was a bit chaotic by times but ever so much fun!

After tea we stopped to take some photos and read up on Victorian etiquette.  The boys were quick to get on their snow stuff and head outside and run off some energy for awhile.  The girls all sat down at the table to do some crafting and make their own calling cards.  And at the end of our visit everyone was presented with a lovely little gift bag. My kids were over the moon!  They were so excited all week in anticipation of this day and they were not disappointed.  It was indeed a grand day!

 The Beukerts.

Have to do the silly photo--and my, don't we look silly!

Day 51

It's been a full day.  The kiddos and I got cracking on house work this morning which didn't always go according to plan.  In fact, I may have raised my voice and gotten quite utterly frustrated with the children. To their credit, they entirely turned things around.  The three of them worked together and did a bang up job on cleaning their room!.

In the afternoon the children puttered while I made a couple cakes, some soup and biscuits and a few oreo truffles. And in the midst of this we had Auntie Linda and her fiance Henk, drop in for a visit. The kids showed them their newly organized room and played a  few fun rounds of scribbage with them.  All in all, a pretty great day...Now if we could just get this snow to stop we'd be all set!

All tuckered out!

Day 50

Today was a good day.  We may have more snow than we know what to do with but today was still a great day.  The kids hit the books early on in the morning and I got a loaf of bread made and a batch of chocolate chip cookies. The kids enjoyed making their own band and attempted to play along to Jesse Cook. Needless to say, it was an interesting cacophony coming from the living room!

Later we all made a trip out to the bright white outdoors to play while Levi napped.  I even managed to heave myself up a snowbank and less than gracefully  slid back down it. While trudging through the snow I managed to fill my boots with snow. As the numbness set in I sat down and helped make a little snow village with the kids before calling it a day. It was ever so lovely to head back to the warmth and comfort of the living room.

For our evening's entertainment Sean suggested we play charades.  What a hoot!! So much laughter and fun.  We must play that more often!

Awww, my little cutie.  I can't believe how big he's getting!  And I absolutely love this sweater!

Day 49

Just gotta love taking a child's question and googling it.  Nate wanted to know what a leech was and after a little discussion we looked it up and found out all sorts of "lovely" stuff. In case you happen to find your self with a leech attached to your skin, your best bet is to break the seal of it's suction with your fingernail and flick it off.  If you try to use something like salt, flame or soap you risk the leech throwing up on your open wound which could introduce bacteria.  We also read an article about a woman who had a leech stuck in her nose for a month.  She discovered it was a leech and not a blod clot one day in the shower. She went to the ER and had "Mr. Curly" removed.  Great stuff eh?!

And now for something completely different:

The kids love this globe.

Day 48

Finally a day of sun shine!!  School and many businesses were closed today as plows worked at moving our over 80 cms of snow off the roads.  The snowbanks are piled high and many roads are still impassable.  School is cancelled again tomorrow and guess what?!!  More snow is forecast for Thursday!

While school may be cancelled for the province, the Peric Academy was open for learning and the kiddos got their work done and enjoyed a lovely play date this afternoon.  We also went for a wee jaunt around town to see how things were getting along.  Montague's main roads are clear but residential roads are still quite sloppy. It was nice to get out of the house for a bit and see civilization again.

Yesterday's game of Ticket to Ride. Daddy won and Emma-Lyn came in second, Sean and I tied for last place.

Nothing like leaping off of snowbanks.

Also, taking a nap on the snow can be great!

And this is a plow that got stuck at the end of our road.  Another plow had to come rescue it.

Marko and I play the Struggle for Catan.  I won!!

The snowbanks and at the right and on the left one of my favourite places to go in the summertime, Gillis'--sigh.

Day 47

Today's post is brought to you by snow...lots and LOTS of SNOW!!!!

Day 46

In case you didn't know, Atlantic Canada is being hammered by yet another winter storm.  Everything is closed and the RCMP have warned everyone to stay off the roads.  Thankfully we're all snug and warm at home.  This morning Sean was inspired to make his own home style church service.  He set up a tray with a slice of bread and a cup of water and invited us to join him in the living room.  Sean played the piano for our hymns and we enjoyed a lovely time of worship together just as a family.

Afterwards we all had some time to do our own thing.  I had some cupboards and baskets that desperately needed some decluttering and organizing so I worked on that.  Levi went down for his nap and we pulled out our game of Carcassone. Daddy won the game!

We had bowls of delicious hearty chili for lunch which warmed us up for shoveling out the driveway afterwards.  The snow was slowing down and we're supposed to get rain and freezing rain and we wanted to clean things up before it got really messy.

I wasn't out there very long before the most beautiful sight met my eyes--
A wonderfully powerful little Kubota came plowing up our driveway.  Marko was able to move our car and his mom's car so that the whole driveway could get cleared out.  We are very thankful to have such amazing neighbours who take the time to clear out our snow.

Instead of quiet time today we had quiet creative time.  The kids did some painting and I played with my pastels while daddy did some writing.  Now the kids and daddy are playing Wii sports before supper time. It has been a lovely storm day in P.E.I.

Day 45

Happy Valentine's Day!!  We are enjoying a lovely day together.  The kids started it off by reading their love letters from daddy and mommy and eating their chocolate covered marshmallow heart.  Nothing says breakfast quite like chocolate and marshmallow!

We had french toast for breakfast and then daddy took Sean out to get his hair cut while the rest of us tidy up at home.  We had grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch and then we were off to Charlottetown for the afternoon. While we ran our errands we stopped into DQ for a special sweet treat before finishing up and heading home.  We stopped in to Subway to pick up supper and now we're all home and full of good food.  The kids are cuddled on the couch watching Bolt before bedtime.  And once the kiddos are in bed Marko and I have some sushi to munch and High Noon to watch to cap off our Valentine activities.

Now, must go pop some corn for the kiddos. :)

Day 44

The kids and I were up and at the housework in record time this morning.  I don't think we've ever gotten through our chores so quickly.  We had planned to start making scotch cookies but since Levi wasn't napping we decided to go to the Library and the new book store and the Nearly New before heading home for lunch.  By the time we got to the cookies Levi was napping and I was out of butter.  Instead, we decided to try out a fun language activity called word sculptures.  I got this idea from Brave Writer. Yesterday Nate and I went through some magazines cutting out different words or phrases that caught our eye.  I glued them to some bristol board and cut them out and today we went through the living room finding objects that we felt suited the words. I think the kids had the most fun sticking them to each other.

Sean has smart, excellence, forced to work, hearty family and appreciated stuck to him.
Nate has keeping it cool.
Emma-Lyn has Hope, beautiful, whimsical and fun, and sweet.
I got the passion of art, wish and crossing the line.
The teddy bear has kissable.
The vacuum has clean.
The stereo has feel the beat
My laptop has That's Silly
The peanut butter jar got stuck with it's what's inside that counts.
And when daddy came home Emma-Lyn excitedly slapped giant on him.
The kids had a lot of fun with this activity and look forward to pulling the words out again and finding new places to put their words.

Day 43

Most days the kids work at  the kitchen table and then there are other days when they take their bins to the living room and get their work done there.
And it's also nice to pull out a game or two and learn while having fun.
