Day 90

Seriously...it's day 90 and this is what I see outside?!  I'll admit it is beautiful but it would be far more comely if it had done this in December instead of the end of March!

We had plans today to go out and meet with our homeschool group and this afternoon was supposed to be the closing for Sean's curling group which would have included his first mini tournament.  But schools are cancelled which means our plans are cancelled too.  Utter disappointment.  I have found it really hard today to be motivated to do anything. I decided it was time to take a mental health day and just let things go. The kids  have played with Lego, enthusiastically went outside to play and did their own game of Charades. I've done laundry, dishes and worked in my sketch book..It's going to be a good day.

Just to remind myself that one day we'll actually get to see flowers growing in the garden again!

Day 89

This makes me so happy!  A good breeze out there, the sun is shining and I didn't freeze my fingers off!

Day 88

A nice quiet day.  We all made it to church this morning thanks to the lack of winter storms.  I had the immense pleasure of teaching the little one's Sunday School class.  What a hoot!  Three very sweet little girls and Nate. We read stories and coloured pictures and the kids were very good to inform me that their regular teacher would let them pick out their own candy when class was over.  My, how their eyes did light up when it was their turn to pick a candy.

In the afternoon Emma-Lyn and I went on our date and enjoyed some fries and a drink.  I love these little dates we go on with each of the children.  It's nice to take the time just to connect with them on their own level rather than it being homeschool related..

When we came home the sun was streaming through our living room picture window and gave me the idea to photograph shadows.  It was fun to play around a bit and get some more ideas for next time.

Day 87

And this is the pantry that Marko and Laura built. And now I'm off to girl's night!!  YAY!!

Day 86

It was a clean the house, organize and declutter kind of day today.  The kids were great at their chores and an immense help when I needed them for extra jobs. We enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner after all our efforts.  And this evening Marko and Sean slipped into town to pick up a pantry for the kitchen.  I'm so excited, it means I can put all of my homeschool odds and ends in one place where Levi won't be able to get at them.

And amidst all our bustle of tidying and cleaning it's nice to sit down and enjoy quiet beauty and attempt to capture the precious innocence of a single rose.

Day 85

Time for a selfie.  I don't take too many pictures of myself but seeing as we're 85 days into this challenge I felt it was time to throw one in there.

Today we ran some errands, I picked up some new curriculum at the post office which I was super excited to get.  Sean had curling this afternoon and we all hung out to watch him play.  Next Tuesday is their last day and they're going to have a little tournament and a banquet.

Day 84

Enjoyed a great day with my kiddos.  We've found a new reading game that Nate especially enjoys.  When I first found it I didn't think it would keep their interest but I was wrong.  The gist is  they get to pick a letter out of the bag and then search for it in a paragraph and whoever finds the most of their letter wins. Emma-Lyn, Nate and I played a few rounds and then read the entire fairy tale we had been using.

This afternoon we worked on our solar system model. The kids love taking out the paint and had a great time working on their planets.  I will admit that doing this kind of project with a curious toddler does make things interesting.  At one point Levi managed to snag a paintbrush laden with black paint and stuffed it in his mouth,  he looked like a little goth baby.

 My busy little boy.

 Hard at work.

Our finished project complete with stars.

Day 83

Today we had fun with toilet paper for our science lesson.  We used the toilet paper to get a better feel for how the planets are arranged in the solar system.  In this picture the sun is right at the front door and Neptune is just in front of me.  The kids enjoyed taking turns putting the planets on our  map and noticing just how far away Neptune is from the sun.

In the afternoon we popped in at the library and we were ever so delighted to see so many of our homeschooling friends there too!  We had a lovely little playdate and made plans for our next official meeting.

Day 82

You gotta love construction toys.  Emma-Lyn loves building her little homes to cuddle up in.  This one reminds me of a yurt.
And the boys being boys built themselves a competitive game.  I think you call this, Throw Your Baby Brother's Sock As High As You Can And Get It To Land On A Rod.  Highest sock landing wins.

 And Nate's winning sock.

Day 81

Why yes, this is my circus and these are my monkeys!!

Day 80

What a day!! It was gorgeous out there!  And the temps were even on the plus side for once!! We enjoyed a laid back morning before heading out to Lyndale for some skiing and snowmobiling!  I got in a good 2 km trek in the woods!  So much fun but oh so tired and sore now!

Day 79

It was ever so delightful to see the sun today.  We got our housecleaning chores done in the morning and then in the afternoon we ran some errands.  One of our favourite stops was at the library.  I love that at our little library they have a section of books you can purchase for a donation.  I found a book that I just love!  The artwork is outstanding and one of the best alphabet books I've seen.  Take a look:

Day 78

Today was rough.  Is it because of the seemingly unending snow, the amount of time stuck inside, the drabness of the daily routine such as it is?  I don't know, but we did not have a stellar morning to say the least. And I wracked my brain for solutions and even asked for ideas from my lovely supportive homeschool group.  Thankfully I now have some ideas and I am encouraged.

Something else that helps ease my mind and help de-stress is to sit and sketch.  Marko took the kids out to do some errands this afternoon which gave me time to relax in a quiet house.  And on top of that he bought me this lovely little rose bush which feels like a breath of fresh air in the middle of this unending winter weather.  Spring will come!

Day 77

Getting just a bit shack wacky over here but we did manage to get through our school stuff, bake two loaves of bread and enjoy some stories.  Daddy did manage to get in to work but left early before the roads got too dicey.  We watched a movie and had supper.  Then it was time to run off some energy by bounding over the daddy jungle gym.

And day four scripture verse:

Day 76

I did it!  I got out my skis and went for it!  I'm sure it was quite comical for my neighbours to see me floundering about in the snow but I'm glad I did it anyways! I'm not going to let all this ridiculous snow get the better of me!! I'm going to have FUN!!

Also I have really cute kids...as seen here:

And today's verse:

Day 75

Another day and more snow... The cars were practically buried!  We got some shoveling done but we were ever so thankful to see our friend Rob with his Kubota come popping in the lane to blow out our driveway!

The kids got through their school work and we're enjoying some quiet time before we play a game or two this afternoon.  I'm also hoping to get my skis out and give them a whirl.  I've wanted to go skiing all winter and just haven't gotten around to it. Don't have much excuse with all this snow lying around!

And in other news, my friend Giles nominated me to share scripture verses for seven days and I thought I'd post them here as well as on my Facebook page.

We couldn't even get this door to open.

There is a Yaris and a CR-V in there somewhere!

And the snow banks are ever so impressive!

Sunday, March 15, 2015

Day 74

It's Sunday and we're snowed in...again!  Thankfully that didn't stop us from having a lovely little family worship time in the living room.  The kids set up the living room and we gathered on the couch to sing, pray and read scripture. I'm glad the children so enjoy this time together.

We've also been baking and will probably play some Wii and watch a movie later.

One of our songs this morning--a favourite.

Don't you wish you were here?!!

Day 73

Today we pushed ourselves out of our comfort zones.  My mother-in-law does a Christian outreach at our local mall on the weekends and while she is away in Ottawa, we and some others are taking turns manning the table.  We share free cookies and hot chocolate as well as free literature.  It was a little daunting at first but once we got chatting with people we enjoyed our time at the mall.

Day 72

Anyone else have these growing up?

I finally bought batteries to get these two old antiques going again.  I remember the days when Karina and I would play around with them.  The Speak & Spell was mine and Karina had the Speak & Math.  My kids were thrilled to check out these old toys.

Day 71

It was a good day today and it didn't even follow our regular routine...and everything turned out great.

I was doing a read aloud with Emma-Lyn and Nate after breakfast when Sean decided he wanted to bake brownies.  So, he did and it turned out great!  The other two were very happy to lick spoons after the batter was made.  We were able to easily transition to our school stuff and even played some language and math games.  We listened to songs about the solar system and songs in German.  Sean played French games on the computer before heading out to curling.  Emma-Lyn and I played Salon and I curled her hair.  She was ever so pleased!  We made homemade creamy chicken soup with biscuits for supper and it was scrumptious on yet another blustery evening.

It was a day that just flowed from one moment to the next...and everything turned out great!

Day 70

We had a rough morning.  I'm not entirely sure why.  We were all growly. We definitely needed to get back into our groove. Things were getting stressful and fairly chaotic so I pulled out our Peric Academy letter of intent.

This is what it says:  I, student's name, as a participant at the Peric Academy do hereby promise to do my best.  I will be prepared to learn, listen and work diligently at all times.  I know there will be times when I won't understand and may become frustrated.  I will do my best to use kind words to ask for help as well as give help to those who request it.  I love my family and I love my homeschool and I will do my best to make this time of learning a time of love and joy to the best of my abilities.

It was something we all needed to be reminded about. And it was just the thing to get us back on track.  We knew there would be days like today where we just needed to remember why we're doing this. It may not solve all our problems but it does set us in the right direction.

Once school and lunch were taken care of we all piled into the car and went to the Bowman's for a delightful playdate!

Day 69

What a gorgeous day out there today!  So nice to  have sunshine AND warmth!  It was nice to have windows open and enjoy the fresh breeze.   The kids worked hard on their school stuff and we got our regular chores done.  And then I turn around and find this...

Cause, honestly ya just never know what the kids will come up with to do next.  Emma-Lyn was quite pleased with her bubble volcano.  In the afternoon Sean and I played Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events The Perilous Parlour Game.  We had a great time and Sean won!

Monday, March 09, 2015

Day 68

It was an out and about day today.  We went in town to check out the 50% off sale at Value Village.  We found some pants, shoes, a dress a couple games and of course some books!!  We could hardly get the pants as the kids were so enthralled with the books.  And then on our way out we decided to pop in on friends of ours and enjoyed a delightful visit!  They had a ping pong table set up and we all had a great time playing with that.  I think the moms might have enjoyed it the most!!

The kids were pretty pooped by the time we came home but when the neighbour kids dropped over they quickly put their snow stuff on and played in the yard until supper time.  And the cutest moment today was hearing Levi say the word apple, but it sounds more like ap-pu...so cute!!

Sunday, March 08, 2015

Day 67

After lunch today, the kids and I went to a recital to see our friend Isabel and Eliza play their violins. The children enjoyed picking out their favourite pieces and seeing their friends on stage.

Saturday, March 07, 2015

Day 66

It's the weekend and high time to see more than these four walls.  The kids and I went to Charlottetown to watch a play called, The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree.  It was fantastic.  Favourite line of the play was when one of the pirates is heading off stage to steal a dress and says, "Oooh and I saw this lovely blue and black dress...or was it gold and white..I couldn't tell." HA!!

And this is lovely Emma-Lyn, all dolled up for our big afternoon on the town.

Day 65

It was a grand day today!  We are all improving!  Fevers are down, spirits are up and we even went on a wee jaunt around Montague this morning.  We spent some time at the Nearly New store and the library.  We even got the housework done and watched some Little Bear.  Tomorrow the kids and I are heading in town to watch play in the afternoon.  I'm thankful that everyone is feeling better and we can climb out of this cold pit.

Now may I introduce you to Clarice the Clumsy Cow.  She likes cuddles and cupcakes and the letter C.

Day 64

How could I resist taking a picture of this cutie pie all curled up beside me on the couch.
And I think his book says it all...

Day 63

We're still knee deep in sickness but managed to watch a documentary on ants and do some read alouds and the kids played with Lego.  We're all still pretty lethargic and trying to find our way back into our routine bit by bit.

I spent some time chasing my little man around the living room trying to get a shot of  this cute little curl behind his ear.  Love that chubby little cheek too!

Day 62

Another day of battling the cold in the Peric household.  We were helped in our efforts when a wonderful friend popped in with her delicious homemade chicken noodle soup and rolls and Jos Louis.  So thankful for her thoughtfulness.  Nate absolutely loved it and ate two and a half bowls of soup!

So yummy.

I think I may be on the mend but Sean and Emma-Lyn are still knee deep in this yuckiness.  Everyone is tucked in bed and sleeping soundly.  Here's hoping that another good night's rest will help.

Something else that is helping me immensely is this:

Emma-Lyn's morning glory plants have sprouted.  Now we have something wonderful to look forward to every morning.  There may be piles and piles of snow outside my window but I have a beautiful little treasure right here in my kitchen to remind me that one day spring will come again.
