Day 181

Today we went to the Belfast Mini Mills for a tour.  The owners were wonderful and engaged the children throughout the process.  The children also enjoyed felting together at the end of the tour.

 Such a cool peacock.
And this little lad decided it was great fun to throw himself into the hostas.

Day 180

It was a full day yesterday traveling and attending different services.  The morning church service lasted two hours which the kids managed quite well.  I was impressed.  Levi had a hard time with it though, so we were up and down and out and in just to help him through it.  And I have to say thanks to one of the most amazing friends I know!  Thank you Sarah Stevenson for being so gracious and understanding while we did what we could through the service.  It was great to see so many old friends and celebrate Alan Ressor's retirement from being the choirmaster at St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral in Charlottetown.  After scarfing down a few finger sandwiches from the reception, we were back in the car heading out to Clinton for a wedding.

On our way out we stopped at the Dollarama to purchase a gift bag and some tissue paper for the wedding gift.  Unfortunately I did not take a good look at how big the bag was for it was far too narrow for our wedding gift.  Thankfully there was the tissue paper and while Marko drove, I wrapped up our gift.  The wedding was beautiful and it was wonderful to see such a beautiful couple get married.  It was quite cold out and Levi was having a hard time and I think we were all fairly worn out so we said our good byes early and headed back home.  It was a Famous Peppers pizza kind of night.  We gobbled up our supper and then snuggled up in the living room to watch a show before bedtime.

Day 179

Yesterday we managed to finish the transformation of the trunk.  Emma-Lyn was a great little helper.  I am so pleased with the result!  And I love that our games have a lovely little home.

Emma-Lyn is also a wonderful model!

Day 178

What a gorgeous day it turned out to be.  There many cloudy moments but the sun won in the end!  Much to our delight!

The kids went with daddy to run errands while I enjoyed some quiet time and read my book.  In the afternoon the kids and I went to the library and the Nearly New.  Emma-Lyn and I had a blast trying on clothes.

After dropping the boys off at home Emma-Lyn and I continued on for our mommy-daughter date.  We grabbed some drinks from Timmy's and off to Knox's dam we went.  We raced and enjoyed exploring one of our favourite places.

Tomorrow will be a busy day with a retirement and a wedding to celebrate!

Knox's is such a beautiful place to visit!

Day 177

Another fun but full day.  We started up our chores then headed out the door to pick up some mod podge from the Buy-Rite.  Then we were back at our housekeeping chores until noon when we headed back out the door and down to the waterfront.  Every Friday from noon until 1pm there will be live performance painting at the waterfront.  And even better than that we enjoyed our time with more of our homeschooling friends.  Gotta love an outing that brings friends together as well.

I enjoyed a little playdate with my friend April while the kiddos watched some Magic School Bus. Afterwards Emma-Lyn and I worked on the trunk and it will soon be all set to go. I love that the kids made up their own math game to play together while puttering about the house. It was a gorgeous day which meant it was time to BBQ some steaks for supper! YUM!!  Marko mowed the lawn then we all headed over to the church to do our share of the cleaning.

Now with all the chores done and excursions taken, I think it's time to go find my book and just relax.

And I almost won a painting...that would have been amazing!  Can't wait to go next Friday!

Day 176

It was a fun filled day.  Sean had his best buddy Austin over for a playdate, Emma-Lyn went to Grammie Peric's for the afternoon and Denise came with Sammy and Ben for a visit.

But before all that fun got started we pulled this ol' trunk out of the garage:

A friend of mine was looking for a trunk and I told her I had this but it wasn't quite what she was looking for.  Marko and I got looking at it and decided that maybe it's something we've been looking for.  The kids used to store their dress up clothes in it and we've since downsized the costumes and upsized our games.  Today's project was to sand it down and give it a fresh coat of Sapphire Blue paint. I'm really happy with how it's turning out.  We'll give it a bit more paint and then some Mod Podge and we'll be all set.  Maybe tomorrow's photo will be of the finished product.

Day 175

Another day, another play date.  We had a wonderful time with Janet and her girls and they stayed for supper too.  Have to say, we're enjoying our summer vacation thus far...now if only the weather would cooperate!  Tomorrow Sean is having a friend over and Emma-Lyn is going to Grammie's for the day.

Day 174

We had a nice day at home today.  Our friend Holly came over for a play date and the kids had piano lessons in the afternoon. For supper we had yummy creamy chicken soup and biscuits. For dessert we enjoyed a delicious lemon meringue pie provided by Holly's amazing mom, Claire.

Day 173

Even though it was a cold wet day we had a great time.  We had a nice quiet morning where the kids played Lego and watched some Magic School Bus and I wrote out my homeschool conference notes.  We also got some chores done before heading into Charlottetown for a playdate. What fun we had!  Always love our times with the Beukerts. The kids even got to help us prepare the stew for supper.  Levi was pleased to do his part.  Thank you Rachel for having us over, it was fantastic!

And for your viewing pleasure, here are Janet and I practicing our step dance routine.

Day 172

It has been a very busy day here.  It didn't help when we overslept and were running out the door to get to church. We had a quick lunch before heading into Charlottetown for my dance recital. It went okay.  We made some mistakes and faltered here and there, but we got through it. I am thankful for the experience and for such wonderful dance partners.

In other news, it's Father's Day!!  And I just want to write a little note to two pretty important fathers in my life.  First there's my dad:

I know he feels like he didn't do much and was away for most of my childhood because his work had him traveling quite a bit. But he did do so much!  I loved our family camping trips!  Getting ahead in life just wouldn't be the same without you!  And what about those fun little campfires in the back yard and stig pies? And I always enjoyed going to church together and afterwards grabbing a couple of cokes and chatting--just you and me. I love your laugh and I'm glad I'm like you.  You are important and you are loved!

And then there's this special fella:
Another amazing man and father.  You are so thoughtful and caring, Marko.  You bless our children every day. I'm thankful the children have such a wonderful father that shares with them, comforts them and helps them up when they fall down.  I admire the patience that you have when they 'help' you with your jobs around the house. Happy Father's Day!

Day 171

I was hoping to go to a ladies retreat this weekend but not only does Marko have a cold, he has a sermon to prepare and we have a dance recital to go to tomorrow and it's Father's Day!!  Something had to give and I had to let go of the retreat and enjoy a beautiful day with my fam jam instead.

As I sipped my coffee in the living room this morning I noticed that the neighbours were having a yard sale so I called to the kids and off we went. Look at what treasures we found!
I am so pleased with those little white tea cups and saucers.  They will make a lovely addition to our poetry and tea times.  Emma-Lyn spied that vase and the boys have a fascination with light houses.  I think the wee little candles are adorable as well.

The kids presented daddy with his Father's day gifts in bed this morning which he seemed quite pleased about. Since tomorrow is so busy we're going to celebrate today. The kids and I went to the library after breakfast and filled our book bag with many interesting books and a couple of videos as well.

Marko has taken a break from writing and he and the kiddos are running a few errands, when they return the kids and I will visit a few other yard sales and peruse the book store.  And this afternoon perhaps we'll make a stop at the beach.

Day 170

Today marked our last day of school work until we begin our fun little summer session in two weeks.  In celebration the kids played with balloons on the trampoline, we had read aloud time, the kids received new sketch pads and pencils which they will be using over the summer and we watched a movie.

In the afternoon Janet and her girls popped over and while Janet and I worked on our routine the kids enjoyed a fun playdate.

Day 169

This post is about a special moment when were at my folks place and I thought it deserved it's own little spot.  My folks run their own cleaning business and get to meet some of the most fascinating people.  One of these people happens to be Major Donald Creighton.  Emma-Lyn and I got to meet him this past Sunday and he is a delight. He was so kind as to offer Emma-Lyn her pick of any of the dolls that his late wife had collected.  There was a beautiful assortment to choose from but these two gals were the ones that caught Emma-Lyn's eye.

They are very precious to her and she has been playing with them and taking very good care of them.
Major Creighton also gave us a little tour of his home which he built himself.  He has quite the collection of clocks and I am told it is quite the sight and sound to hear them all mark the hour.

I would have to say the most interesting story he shared with us was about the deer head mounted to his entryway wall.  It seems that his wife had hit the deer and the officer that came to the scene was into taxidermy and stuffed it for them.  They named the deer Toyota.

Day 168

Well, that was an interesting day.  Started off on an awkward note when we called up Grampa Hope to wish him a happy birthday, only it's not his birthday--his birthday is JULY 17th.  However his brother Max happened to be celebrating his birthday today so we gave him a call and serenaded him with our melodious voices.  He was ever so thankful for our thoughtfulness and seemed quite chuffed by our little call.

Then to add to the excitement just as I was putting Levi down for his nap the kids start yelling that a police car was pulling into our yard.  By the time I got to the window he had pulled out and turned around which thankfully meant that no one was dead. And then the phone rings, I answer it and the other person promptly hangs up...That was fun. Just thankful it all happened in the day time.  Things like that seem so much creepier at night.

Just before lunch Sean and I sat down to play this game:

It's called 'SMATH.  It's like scrabble but with math tiles.  Sean loved it!  I was humbled by it.  I've never been a math type person but was hopeful that I would do alright with it.  Sean beat me like a rented mule!  He scored 70 points in one turn.  We did have to end early for lunch and a playdate.  Our final score was 101 to 54...like I said very humbling.

Day 167

Today we got to check out a really neat straw house. When we first pulled in, it reminded me of a hobbit home. What an amazing home. It is completely off the grid, they even use a composting toilet. While we were all in awe of this inspiring building, I have to admit that honestly I don't think I could hack it. Maybe for a back to nature kind of getaway but not for every day life.

This afternoon we enjoyed piano lessons and Janet and I practiced our step dance routine.

If you are looking for something fun to do on Sunday around two, come on down to Charlottetown Rural for an exciting concert and cheer us on!  Just don't tell Janet, she might freak out!

Day 166

It was nice to get back into the swing of things this morning. We did our school work on the deck and in the afternoon we played some games.  Emma-Lyn and I really enjoyed playing Gobblet!  It is a lot of fun and addicting!

Day 165

Home again, home again jiggety jig.  I had such an awesome weekend and it is wonderful to be back home safe and sound.

As I sit here and reflect on my experiences this weekend I am just in awe of so many things.  I loved getting away with some fantastic homeschool mamas.  We relaxed on the early boat and eagerly anticipated what was to come.  We had a ball second hand shopping together and sharing meals together.  The conference itself was so encouraging and uplifting.  I've come away with new ideas and tools to implement in our homechool days. I even won a door prize which was a fun little bonus. I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with a dear friend of mine that I hadn't seen in way too long.  I love that we were able to pick right up right where we left off.  I just have to say, thank you to Sarah for being exactly who you are, I was so blessed to be with you again and hear all that you had to share, you are a beautiful woman and I am so very fortunate to call you my friend.

And after all the fun of the conference was over I enjoyed a lovely little visit with my family.  We laughed and talked and ate ourselves silly.  And would you just look at this:
These amazing items were all donated to our Peric School of Learning from my Uncle Frank and Aunt Holly.  I was just so tickled and just love that my Aunt even made the little card for it.  I'm going to laminate it and post it in our kitchen.  And we are all very excited to try out the telescope!

And today I had the hounour of hanging out with this group of amazing women.  These ladies are all breast cancer survivors.  And not only that, they are a dragon boat team called Women Alike Abreast A River. Dragon boating for cancer survivors began 20 years ago in Vancouver.  It has been a way to promote awareness as well as team spirit and a great way to exercise. I wish all the best to this fantastic team!

Day 164

Such a great weekend! Totally enjoyed every minute of it! So nice to meet new people, find new treasures and be encouraged. Now visiting with my folks and tomorrow Marko will come over with the kids! And this is a picture of three of my favourite finds.

Day 163

My lovely friend Maria reading the morning paper on the Holiday Island. Looking forward to a fun filled day on the mainland!

Day 162

Big exciting day here! I'm getting ready to head to the mainland for the weekend.  Some homeschooling mamas and I are going to the Nova Scotia Homeschool Conference.  I'm really looking forward to it.  YAY!

Me and my kiddos...and Levi has a toy in his mouth...just in case you were concerned.

Day 161

A bit of a different day.  We did a few school books on the deck before heading inside to watch a documentary on Ice Worlds.  Afterwards the kids drew a picture and narrated a section of the show.  They really enjoy doing that and I'm loving the documentaries!

This afternoon we enjoyed a lovely playdate with our sweet little friend Holly.  The kids played on the trampoline and ran around outside before coming in to watch a little video.

Nothing so nice as cuddling up with a good friend to watch a movie.

Day 160

What a super fun day down at Kings Castle!  We had an amazing time hooping, playing with poi and watching one of the amazing mom's do some fire hooping.  The kids also enjoyed running around and playing on all the play structures.  The bugs were a bit crazy and I may have had on like five different types of bugs spray but it was well worth it!

 Sean playing with the Poi.

Amazing Simone showing us how it's done.

Hooping and playing poi at the same time.  Thank you Denise for this shot!

Day 159

It was a good school day outside.  We did our regular stuff and everyone had a great day.  Tomorrow we're looking forward to hanging out with our homeschool group and hooping it up with our hula hoops.

And this is tonight's thirty minute sketch.

Day 157

There was lots of fun to be had this morning.  Sean and I jetted out the door before 9 o'clock to get to our local library's book sale.  Denise was already there waiting anxiously for things to begin. We were giddy with excitement as things got underway and Sean helped out by getting us our boxes to drop our new found treasures in. There was a good crowd of people enjoying the sale and it was fun to chat as we went along.  Sean and I brought home two boxes full of fun finds.  Can't wait to get reading.  And with this many books we will certainly be purging some of our old books.

Later on I took the kids to the Artisans on Main.  This is another favourite place to go in the summer time.  We enjoy checking out the pottery, jewellry, paintings and many other lovely hand crafted treasures.  While we were there Sean was invited to try his hand at rug braiding.  The artist showed how to carefully take each piece of material and braid in between the others.  After picking out all our favourite paintings we headed out the door and decided to pop into the Nearly New store.  Emma-Lyn was delighted to find a pair of sparkly pink shoes.  As we headed out the door Sean spied the new sign for Amiel's Island Fire.  It's a great store with every kind of hot sauce you'd ever want.  As well there were items from different business for sale.  We tried some different sauces, I think my favourite was the honey hot sauce.

And now the kids are in bed, Marko is off to games night and I'm going to grab my iced tea, some salt and vinegar chips and my book. I am one happy camper!

Honestly, if felt like Christmas when I opened the boxes to show everyone our new to us books.

And there were a few people who enjoyed the boxes our books came in as well.

Day 156

Well, that was one humdinger of a day.  It started out well, the kids and I got the house cleaned up  just in time for our playdate guests to arrive.  It was a wonderful playdate.  I had so much fun talking with my dear friend Maria while the children played with her boys.  They jumped on the trampoline, played on the swing set and watched a little bit of a movie.  Maria and I had a chance to catch up and drink coffee and just relax and enjoy adult company.

Just as her car pulled away Marko's car pulled in and that right there folks is when the wheels came off the wagon.  Usually we have a meal plan and things just get done...well not tonight.

Tonight Marko wanted to get the lawn at the church cut and I had a used curriculum sale I wanted to go to and there wasn't much gas in the car and we still didn't know what to do for supper. We scrambled to come up with some options but our stress just kept mounting as the minutes ticked away and we realized that something had to give.

As much as I dearly wanted to check out some really nice books, I knew it would be far better to just let it go and finish tidying things up here while Marko picked up some groceries for supper.

We barbequed some sausages and made a salad. Afterward Marko took Nate and Emma-Lyn with him to the church while Sean, Levi and I stayed home.  While it wasn't the evening I had planned for myself it did turn out quite well.  And now I'm looking forward to enjoying these treats this evening.  The cappuccino ice cream is delicious and ever so cute in that wee little container.

Day 155

So great to wake up and see the sun again!  It has been a grey and dreary past couple of days.  This afternoon we took the time to put in some of the garden.  All of the kiddos helped, even Levi but he mostly just wanted to pick stuff up and toss it around.  Nate was kind enough to take him to his swing to entertain him.

Emma-Lyn hard at work.

Day 154

What an amazing day! I decided to change things up this morning. After breakfast, instead of having some free time I had the kids clean up, then pull out their bins and get school work started while Levi was up.  We usually don't start until he is down for a nap but morning naps aren't going to last forever so I thought I'd see how things would go.  Levi munched away on his breakfast as the others got to work.  And the best part of today's work was this:
This is Emma-Lyn's journal.  And it just makes me jump for joy to read this. In so many ways we've hit brick walls but today was a beautiful break through and Emma-Lyn was going for it.  She pulled out her new math book and worked on her sums with amazing success. And she was ever so pleased when she reached questions that she knew the answers to without using her manipulatives.

I absolutely love that she chose to write that she loves math in her journal.  As a student, I never enjoyed math and honestly dreaded the subject.  But now as a homeschool mom I'm really getting a kick out of new methods to teach concepts and it is actually fun to play with numbers and not find them intimidating.  This is where I want the kids to be: in love with learning.  May they see each new topic or concept as a puzzle to figure out or a mystery to solve or a journey that leads to amazing adventures!

Tuesday, June 02, 2015

Day 153

Today we went to a lovely pottery barn and while the photos should be of the pottery, the kids were just so taken by the goats!  They loved feeding them and watching them play about in the meadow.

Monday, June 01, 2015

Day 152

This was this morning's read aloud:
And I told myself that I was only going to read one chapter. HA!  I must admit that I have a bad habit.  When a book is well written and ever so engrossing I have a very hard time putting it down. I told the children that we were going to read just one chapter but even they were hooked and twisted my rubber arm to read another chapter or three...
I must try harder to slow down and savour each chapter. We did manage to get some school work done after that but not quite as much as I hoped.
