Day 334

It has been a good day.  The kids enjoyed playing in the freshly fallen snow this morning before doing their school work. Everyone did a great job getting everything done and this afternoon the kids made some chocolates. We'll be giving these to our neighbours in our little Christmas treat plates this year, as well as some other little goodies.

This afternoon I worked on putting up more primer on the bathroom walls.  Funny, how when you find a job like that to do the kids all want to be in there with you!  Sean came to join me first. He was looking for help in typing his first play on the computer.  Once he was satisfied, Emma-Lyn popped in wanting to learn her Awana verses. She did a great job and it wasn't long before  Nate came scampering up the stairs with his handbook ready to recite his verses.  I managed to finish off the primer that we had and will have to pick up some more if I hope to ever finish this project.

Day 333

A fairly quiet Sunday, although the kiddos in the nursery at church were a little wild and wooly!

In the afternoon we did creative quiet time, Marko and Sean went on their date and the kids played in the snow.  When they came inside it was definitely time for some hot chocolate with candy canes.  I caved and let the kids watch The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. They loved it, and I may have enjoyed it with them too.

This evening they cancelled our church service due to slippery roads and snow squalls.  This meant some extra creative time after supper. While the kids finished up their chores and played for a bit, I pulled out my pencils and made this sketch. I like the result but definitely need to keep practicing.

Day 332

Enjoyed a great family fun day.  Marko and the boys got their hair cut this morning while I puttered around the house tidying up and getting things ready for our outing to see the Christmas parade in Charlottetown.

The kids were very excited to see the parade.  We went to our usual spot in front of the Maritime Christian College.  I love that the students set up tables and offer yummy hot chocolate.  This was Levi's first Christmas parade and he seemed to enjoy it.  His favourite things to see were the dirt bikes.  He kept calling out, "Bike! Bike!"

Afterwards Marko dropped me off at the Swiss Chalet while he took the kids home.  I met up with Tammy, Karen and Jennie for our annual Festive special and Christmas party.  It was a fun evening full of food, fun, gifts and lots of laughter.  My kind of way to end the day.

We drew names for the gift exchange.  This is what Tammy got me.  I love it!

Day 331

Busy day of cleaning and shopping and soon some playdate time which will be great fun.  Then this evening Sean and I are off to Stratford for a birthday party.  I'm dropping him off and then doing some Christmas shopping with my friend Tammy.

I'll be picking Sean up at 8:30 and heading home to Marko's games night at our house.  And once I've shooed Sean off to bed it'll be time to call a dear friend in Quebec and curl up on the couch with an herbal tea.
This boy loved playing in the leaves when we came home from our shopping excursion.  Then to his delight our friends Claire and Holly pulled up and this was his reaction!  Love it!

Day 330

Just had to run out this morning before breakfast to snap some shots of the frost.

We had a great homeschooling day.  Although we did have to make a run to the store for some ingredients for our baking time this afternoon.

It always makes me a little nervous going to stores during school hours.  You just never know what people might say.  Some people ask why the kids aren't in school and for the most part when we say we homeschool we get positive responses.

But then there are other times when people just stare and say loud enough for you to hear, "Why are they  here??"  This wasn't spoken directly to me but my children heard and it kinda smarts

I feel like I should plaster stickers on my kids and I that say, "It's okay for me to be here, I homeschool."  Not a big deal, just a pet peeve I guess.

Day 329

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...  The kids were so excited to listen to Christmas music today!  Nate's first words to me were, "We get to listen to Christmas music today!!" They were over the moon when they found out we'd be putting up our Christmas decorations after we got our school stuff done.

Sean and Nate had their piano lessons and Claire and I as well as our daughters practiced our step dancing.  It was a lot of fun.  Looking forward to Friday's practice!

I love the cozy, golden glow of the lights on the Christmas tree.

Day 328

This is one of my favourite finds from last night's book sale.  I had taken a copy out of our library and just loved it!  Very excited to have it on our own shelves now.  I love that it's Island specific and has so much useful information.

I promised the kids they could turn on Christmas music tomorrow and I think I may even pull out the Christmas decorations too!  Can't wait to see their faces when I haul the boxes out!

Day 327

So far the bedroom transition is going well.  This morning I came to the boys' room to find Sean changing Levi's diaper--I could get used to that!

The rest of the morning has been really good.  The forecast was sounding pretty dreary for the day but this morning the sun was attempting to shine and the wind was warm so we went for a walk around the block.  It was fantastic!  It was great to feel the wind on your face and watch the leaves dance in the yard.

Once we had finished playing outside we came in for poetry and tea time.  Sean and I took turns reading different selections. Always have to read the favourites as well as try out a few new pieces.

We worked on our math and did our map skills pages.  I read more from The Tale of Despereaux and we did our history sketches.  This afternoon after quiet time we'll watch a Planet Earth video and draw a narration picture and we're going to try out our Planet Earth game. And I think it's finally time to take down the birthday decorations. This means that we'll probably be playing some balloon games as well. So glad to be enjoying our homeschooling day together.

 Leaves dancing.

Kids in various stages of climbing the Maple tree.

Day 326

It's a very wet and windy kind of Sunday.  Church was going well until Levi got too tired to care and was screaming his fool head off.  This was my cue to take the boy home and put him to bed.  While he snoozed I listened to a Bible study by our friends the Skys.  It was a great way to spend the morning.

After lunch Nate and I went on our date, we picked up his frozen yogurt and my fries and went down to Roma for a little drive.  I love spending one on one time with each of the kids.  You really get a better sense of their unique character.

We decided at lunch time that Levi was finally ready for the switch from his own room to going over to the boy's room.  Emma-Lyn was super pumped to get her own room.  And the boys were pretty pleased to have Levi bunking with them. For the rest of the afternoon we all worked at rearranging the rooms.

This evening, Levi wasn't falling asleep quite as well as we had hoped and the boys were at a bit of a loss as to what to do with him.  I came in and told Levi he had to be quiet and go to sleep.  He wasn't super thrilled with that response.  I thought I'd give him a few minutes and see if he would settle.  He was whimpering and the boys decided to sing to him.  Levi loves music and it was just the trick.  So proud of my big boys for taking care of their little brother like that.  Also really proud of Sean for offering to take the bottom bunk so that he could take better care of Levi.

And here is my favourite pottery piece from yesterday's travels.  I love the colour and that it's a second.  It has little imperfections but it's still so beautiful.  If you're looking for beautiful pottery, I highly recommend Koleszar Pottery.

Day 325

What a grand day!  Marko took the kids to town for the day.  And I enjoyed some time all by myself.   It was refreshing.  I went to a local artisan's pottery shop and picked up some nice pieces.  I also met up with some friends and I received these amazing slippers!

My beautiful friend Simone is wildly talented.  Not only does she knit, but she hoops and even fire hoops, and she homeschools her two wonderful children.  I am so thankful for Simone and her talents.  I just love my new slippers.  They are so comfy, cozy and they have a suede bottom so I won't slip when I'm getting my tea in the morning!  Denise was also at the pottery shop and we came back to my place for a visit before she had to head out.

Later, I went to the Nearly New and found two pairs of pants and a top that I liked. It was ever so nice to shop without wondering what Levi was getting into.

Once I was back home I sat down with some cook books and looked up a few new soup recipes and then did a little colouring.  Such a relaxing and energizing kind of day!  Just what I needed!!

It was great to have the whole family come home again and hear about their adventures with daddy.

Another fun thing Marko and I have discovered...finally--is the at home date night.  I've read about it in articles before but just couldn't see how it would work for us.  But last night when Marko came home from work the kids had just started a movie so while they watched their show, we had our supper.  And it was fantastic.  It was so simple and yet so effective.  We had quiet time, just the two of us over supper.  We'll definitely have to get more home date nights into our schedule!

Day 324

What a grand play date!  The kids had a blast while my friend and I enjoyed chatting.  We talked about heart issues, homeschool issues, life issues, world issues.  It was fantastic. And I was reminded once again of how important friends are.  Sometimes I don't get to see friends as often as I would like. I am very thankful that when we do get together we make the most of every moment.  So, dear reader if you happen to be a friend--thank you so much for loving me.  I love you all so very much.

Day 323

Sometimes you just hit a rough patch traveling down this road we call life. And it isn't all that fun.

I chose homeschooling and for the most part I love this lifestyle.  But this past week has just been so hard.  I don't know if we've hit the November slump--if that even is a thing-- or we're just needing a little change.

I've caught myself wondering repeatedly why did we go for this? Most of the time my kids are amazing, fun and upbeat, but then there are times when they're so crazy I think I might just go lock myself in the bathroom and never come out... (although, I've heard that 15 hours in a bathroom can be agonizing...ahem--that's another story.)

I am looking forward to getting our cleaning done tomorrow and then going on a much needed play date.

And like I said, this is just a rough patch, we'll get through this and hopefully be better for it once we're through it.

 Mr. Levi enjoying his brownie.

My very happy Awana kiddos.  I love how much they enjoy this program.  Tonight Emma-Lyn and Nate earned their first badge.  They were ever so chuffed.

Day 322

The kids spent part of their morning frolicking in the snow while I prepped our yummy creamy mushroom chicken soup for supper.  When they came in it was time for hot chocolate and read aloud time.  We're currently enjoying the Tale of Despereaux. After our reading we got into the school work.  We hit some major road blocks which wasn't much fun. We did press on and muddle through.  The afternoon's science lesson went much better than I had anticipated which was a great way to finish the day.

The soup and some homemade rosemary focaccia bread were the perfect comfort food for this wintery day.

And this is our first Christmas decoration of the season:

Day 321

Had a great day with our homeschool group.  The children really seemed to enjoy the election process.  Afterwards the group came back to our house for a planning meeting.  So many great outings and events to look forward to.

And this is me and Denise...Love hanging out with this amazing momma!!  We laugh, we cry, we laugh some more and just generally enjoy being together!

Day 320

I finished my first crocheted piece tonight!  And would you believe it's a scarf?!! I made a lot of mistakes, but I've learned a lot and really enjoy it.  Now I need to go get more yarn and try another pattern!

Sunday, November 15, 2015

Day 319

Today was Levi's official birthday and it was pretty low key.  We did the presents and cake yesterday so today we sang Happy Birthday to him one more time with a cupcake and candle to blow out.  He loved that!

This Tuesday our homeschool group is going to do our own little mock election.  The children will be choosing a mascot.  The materials that I received from Elections Canada didn't have the posters to go with the mascots.  I have all the other materials and I really felt that the kids would need a visual to go with the campaign speeches and songs so I sketched  these four candidates for our mascot. Please meet: Sam the Wolf, Desneiges the Polar Bear

and Charlie the Raven and Neevee the Caribou.
Hope the kids enjoy participating in our little election.

Day 318

Today my folks came over and we celebrated Marko, Nate and Levi's birthday.  Levi is turning the big two tomorrow!  He was ever so impressed by his sparkler candle!  It was a quick but great visit!

And would you look at this:
This is the man that will not use the computer so he knows nothing of Facebook, Twitter or Email but now he owns a smart phone!!!  And if something as unthinkable, strange and down right crazy as that can happen. Then surely the Toronto Maple Leafs can win the Cup this year?!!!

Friday, November 13, 2015

Day 317

This morning we had the treat of picking up my sister at the ferry terminal. The kids totally enjoyed regaling Auntie Karina with all their funny little stories and asking her about what she and mommy did when they were young.

Amidst the visiting we did get the house cleaning done and watched a movie.  Marko was able to get off work early and we all headed in town for supper and dessert. Auntie Karina had brought Burger King coupons and Marko had a coupon for Dairy Queen.  It was a fun night.

Thursday, November 12, 2015

Day 316

Every day we have quiet time.  It's usually after lunch and lasts for about an hour.  It's a time for everyone to be in a room by themselves with some toys or books to play with quietly.  It's one of my favourite times of day.  It's nice just to sit and recharge for the rest of the day.

Yesterday we tried out some quiet creative time.  Everyone had to choose a creative project to work on.  Nate and Emma-Lyn both chose to paint while Sean and I did some sketching, Marko was home yesterday and he did some writing.  It was nice to change things up a bit and crank up the creative juices--the quietness seemed to vary but overall it was a great way to spend our time.

Day 315

These are photos of my Pake and Beppe (Frisian for Grandfather and Grandmother)  They were both a part of the Dutch resistance in the WWII.

Pake would help downed pilots and give them his clothes so they wouldn't get caught. He would also cut phone lines and try to wreck train rails.  Beppe hid weapons in a false bottom of the baby carriage and remembered having to watch her Jewish friends be paraded down the street never to see them again.

While they survived the war, their efforts and sacrifices will not be forgotten.

Marius Gerard Wuite and Anna Wuite Kingma.

We will remember them.

Day 314

Thankful today for a good night's rest the night before!  Today we tackled our Remembrance Day activities.  The pamphlets we got from the library were fantastic.  The kids did word searches, made a memory card game and did mazes and dot to dot pictures.  We read some fantastic stories from the books What We Remember and Great Canadian War Heroes.  We listened to the Last Post and watched a Heritage Minute about John McCrae and recited In Flanders Fields together. We also went down a little rabbit trail and learned quite a bit about the Halifax Explosion.  Nate remembered seeing that Heritage Minute and wanted to know more about it.

We also had piano lessons, curling lessons and step dance lessons today. I think it may be time to make a hot chocolate and curl up on the couch with my book.

Monday, November 09, 2015

Day 313

Today was a hard day. We got through our regular school stuff but we didn't manage to play the Ukloo game or work on our Remembrance Day activities. I have had a few sleepless nights lately so it was hard to keep the energy going and by the afternoon I gave up.  I crashed on the bed and if the kids asked for anything my general answer was yes. If it kept them busy and they didn't burn the house down, it was fair game.

They played lots of Lego and Sean and Emma-Lyn made me a lovely necklace while Nate worked on his own bead creation.  Once they tidied up from the creating they watched some Monkey George and I finally pulled myself up off the bed.

After supper Emma-Lyn and I went on our date.  We picked up some hot chocolates and doughnuts from Tims and went to the library in Murray Harbour.  What a lovely librarian!  She was so helpful! And now the boys want to go there on their dates!

And here I am with my homemade necklace.  Sean did the beadwork while Emma-Lyn did the braiding

Day 312

It is so wonderful to have my handsome hubby home once again.  And he reports that the guys game weekend extravaganza was an amazing success!!

Both Levi and Nate are dealing with colds now so we're taking things easy tomorrow.  We'll be doing some Remembrance day activities and playing a few rounds of this game:
Nate got this for his birthday from his sweet little friend Holly.

Day 311.2

Today we had a change of plans that meant some quick thinking and seeking ideas from friends on Facebook for Nate's birthday adventure.

We began our day with a trip to the Bulk Barn for some fun treats for later.  Then we were off to the Fun Place for lots of climbing, sliding and jumping. We enjoyed  some slushies and ring pops and a coffee for me.

It was just a quick drive over to my friend Tammy's place for a little visit.  The kids watched a movie while Tammy and I chatted and had a Pepsi. It wasn't long before we were on the road again to our next stop.  We picked up some snacks and the kids bought their own little treats from the five dollars that they each received from Grammie Peric.

We made our way home and quickly got to work on making supper and setting up the living room for a camp out.  I made Nate's favourite homemade mac n' cheese.  We had our chocolate cupcakes topped with our Bulk Barn candies.  After Levi completely demolished his, I took him up for his bath and bedtime while the others got all cozy in the living room.

I got Nate a fun glow in the dark writing set which all the kids enjoyed messing around with and we put on our glow in the dark bracelets and now we're enjoying watching Bolt.

It's been a really fun day with the kiddos, looking forward to having Marko home tomorrow.

Playing at that Fun Place.

All set for our mac n' cheese!

Nate loved his sparker six.

All camped out for the night.
And our fun glow in the dark pictures.

Day 311

Happy Birthday to my amazing husband who is celebrating his big 4-0 today!!  And a very Happy Birthday to my big guy Nate who is celebrating his 6th birthday today!!  Love you both so very much!

Friday, November 06, 2015

Day 310

Today I did the house cleaning by myself as a little treat for the children since tomorrow is Nate's birthday.  They were thrilled and while they didn't do their regular duties they did help me when called upon.

This afternoon we enjoyed a lovely playdate with some friends. When Marko came home we headed over to the Pizza Delight for supper.  Then it was time for Marko to jet off for his 40th birthday extravaganza!  My birthday gift to him was a weekend away with his buddies to play games.  He has a great group of guys that get together monthly to play games like Diplomacy, Settlers, and Legendary.

This evening kids and I baked some chocolate cupcakes for tomorrow.  Sean and I played a quick game of Pyramath before heading into the living room for some dancing!  It was such delight to watch their antics.  And now everyone is tucked in for the night and I will get some decorating done before heading to bed.  Looking forward to more adventures tomorrow!

The cupcakes kinda remind me of Goombas from Super Mario Bros!

Day 309

Wow, just wow...That was a day.  That was a day full of screw ups. The kids screwed up, I screwed up and often times we screwed things up together.  And it wasn't pretty.  If today had been a fish I would have thrown it back...that is until the drive home from Awana.  I have amazing imperfect kids and my kids have an amazing and imperfect mom.

I felt pretty crappy about my actions and words and apologized and those beautiful kids forgave me. Nate said, "It's okay, Mommies make mistakes too." Words of wisdom from my soon to be six year old.

Thankfully, in the chaos there are the bright points, the moments of brilliance.  Math time today with Emma-Lyn we found the beauty of patterns in skip counting.

Wednesday, November 04, 2015

Day 308

Oh my...what a day.  I could not fall asleep last night.  It took me until 4:30 this morning to finally fall asleep. I am so tired right now.  Gonna do up this post and then tumble into bed.

This morning we went to the Post Office to send off some very important cards to a very important someone.  Then we were off to the Superstore, Avocado and the new craft shop here in Montague.  I LOVE the craft shop.  I had a lovely chat with the owner and I love how she had space for children to enjoy themselves.  That perk definitely made it easier for me to peruse all the lovely yarns and other crafty bits.  In fact I picked up a new hobby.  Something to do on those nights I can't sleep.

And this was today's big excitement:
The boys watched as the excavator tore down the collapsed barn in a neighbour's yard.

 They loved it!

And this is my new hobby, crocheting.  What little I know I've learned off of YouTube. This is the third time I've attempted this much today.  I've made lots of mistakes but I'm learning and enjoying the process.

Tuesday, November 03, 2015

Day 307

This morning the kiddos worked on some special homemade cards for certain special someone. Then it was time to get cracking at the books.  Nate and Emma-Lyn worked together and then I worked with Sean.  Sean and I enjoyed a great game of Pyramath. The kids and I have really been enjoying learning through games and personal interests.  Emma-Lyn had a question about how we hiccup so off we went to our bookshelf and pulled out numerous body books. And not only did we find our answer but also came across some interesting info on our journey. Fun!

This afternoon the Sean and Nate had piano practice, Sean went to his first curling practice of the season and Emma-Lyn had step dance and just before they went off to prayer meeting we played a few quick rounds of Taboo.

And this is my current book.  So far, so good.

Monday, November 02, 2015

Day 306

Today the kiddos and I tackled reorganizing our chore chart.  We added some new ones and put them up on the wall so that I can remember who is doing what.  We enjoyed a lovely poetry and tea time and we did our history sketches in the living room just to change things up a bit.

Levi seems to be a bit under the weather.  His temperature is up, he's grouchy and clingy and just not his usual upbeat self.  And I hate to think that I might be coming down with something too but, by this evening my head was throbbing and I am ready to go to bed.  Here's hoping we're all feeling better in the morning.

Sunday, November 01, 2015

Day 305

Happy Movember Everyone!  Today Marko shaved off the goatee and is sporting a pretty handsome clean shaven face.  He's aiming to grow both a moustache and full beard.

We had a great day today.  Enjoyed being with our church family this morning and then this afternoon we spent quality time with the Bowmans.  There was delicious food, great company and some Ticket to Ride Europe.  Now to get some homeschool prep done and crawl into bed.
