The Last Day of April

And you would be thinking that we would have enjoyed at least one more burger love but I am all burgered out.  Marko was out with the boys last night and had a couple tasty beefy offerings with them.

This afternoon Marko and I went for a brisk walk in Brudenell. It was lovely. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice too so hopefully we will all go for a walk on the trail.

This evening we enjoyed a fun filled evening with the Bowmans.  It was Denise's birthday so there was even delicious ice cream cake to eat!

And now we're home and I'm all in but my shoelaces.  This stupid cold is kicking my butt!  Time to go to bed.

A Cold in April?!!

Blech!!  I woke up this morning with a sore throat and that niggling feeling that I was coming down with a cold.

I went to my FB wall and sought the knowledge of my friends of what remedies they might recommend.  This is a smattering of things I have ingested today in order to alleviate my sore throat and congestion.  Not pictured here are the honey and apple cider vinegar I used as well.  I've also got some store brand vapo rub on.   And to top it all off I'm off to bed early in hopes of nipping this stupid cold in the bud.
Here's hoping for a soothed throat and easy breathing tomorrow!

Not much to report on today.  We did our regular homeschool stuff and tonight I went to my dance class and the homeschool meeting.

So, here I give you a little look into something I like to collect.  I like to find unique coffee/tea cups.  I love this little one. When I noticed the Eiffel Tower on it I decided that as Sean and I work  through our travel journals, I'll look for cups that represent each county I "visit."

Love the little flower at the bottom of the cup.

Earrings and Other Fun Projects

This morning the kids dove right into their own creative project.  They pulled out their collection of beads and other odds and ends and they each made me a pair of earrings!  It was the sweetest thing!

Here I am modeling the pair that Emma-Lyn made me.

Sean, being the enterprising lad that he is, started working out their business plan of setting up a lemonade/jewellery stand.

We spent some time doing our school stuff outside but it was still a little chilly so finished up at the kitchen table.

In the afternoon the kids and I tackled taking out the large ugly bush in our front yard.  We did a lot of cutting and shoveling, pulling and pushing and with much strength finally pulled it out of the ground.  Then the kids took turns carting away the twigs and branches in the wagon.

Once we had all that cleaned up Sean wanted to try out the juicer.  He and Nate set to work juicing our clementines, a couple carrots, apple pieces and a little lemon.  The end result was okay but not quite what they were hoping for.  I'm seeing more experimenting in their future!

Friends Helping Friends

Today we took time off from the books  to head in town to help out dear friends of ours.  Levi got to play with the Bowmans while the rest of us headed over to the Johnson's house.

My sweet friend Melinda and her family are moving back to the States and in a  bit of a whirlwind so we wanted to do what we could to help ease this stressful event.  The kids played together while Melinda and I went through shelves upon shelves of books and packed them up. It was nice to chat and pack together.

Tinker Time

Today the kids enjoyed some tinker time with their homeschool group.  They each got to work with a different set of interesting materials to complete fun challenges.  They had to build a structure that stood up on it's own.  Then they had to make it taller.  Another challenge was to make something you could wear. And at one point they got to switch materials with someone else. Lots of fun creativity! The kids had a blast!

 Happily tinkering away.

Homemade Burger Love

This evening for a treat we had our own burger love creations.  Sean desperately wanted to try the Go Bananas burger from the Frosty Treat in Kensington but we just couldn't justify driving all the way out there for an overpriced burger.

That's when we settled on creating our own burger masterpieces.  The boys decided to try to recreate the Go Bananas one complete with waffles, banana slices and hazelnut spread but minus the ice cream pop.

Marko created his own unique burger called the Renaissance.  It was made up of  a slice of Gouda cheese,  a 5oz prime rib patty, zesty relish, Dijon mustard, two slices of crispy bacon, radicchio and spinach with chipotle ranch dressing in a kaiser bun. He quite enjoyed his labour of burger love.

I on the other hand, am pretty much  all burgered out.  Even while tasting the latest burgers my taste buds just haven't been in it.  I just sit there thinking I'm eating--another-- burger. Sigh.   So tonight I opted for the ever popular simple salad!

Colours for Cancer

This afternoon the kids took part in the Colours for Cancer fundraiser held at the Church of Christ.  All the proceeds go to the QEH Pediatric Oncology & the IWK's Oncology Deptments.  The kids enjoyed creating their masterpieces and enjoying some snacks.  Emma-Lyn and Nate also decided to get their face painted.

Sean creating his "Morning in Tibet."

 Super Girl!

And this evening it was time for more cake as we celebrated this lovely lady's birthday!

Fun at Victoria Park

After we got our housework done we headed down to Victoria Park to meet up with our other homeschooling friends to hangout and enjoy the marvelous warmth from the sun!  It was glorious!

The kids had a blast and I thoroughly enjoyed myself as well. Afterwards we went to Owl's Hollow and each of the children got to plant a seed that they got to take home. A fun little way to celebrate Earth Day.

This evening I enjoyed a lovely time with some girlfriends.  We tried some more burgers, had some birthday cake and enjoyed a movie.  Great start to the weekend.

My wonderful friend Alex and her daughter brought this fun ribbon stick to the park.  It was a hit.  Emma-Lyn really enjoyed it.

Celeste and Holly with the ribbon stick.

Celeste decided it would be fun to wrap her mom up in the ribbon.  Alex is such a great sport!!

Funny Little Tales

Before step dance class this evening I popped into Value Village to see what I could find.  I found a cute little coffee mug and this book:

I bought it mostly because of the postcards I found inside it!  Love the overhead shot of Louisbourg.  I love Louisbourg and I'm looking forward to reading the book too.

Two kinda funny little tales from today...

As we're driving to Steerman's Farm to pick up our farm fresh meat, Sean licks his lips and exclaims, "There's hair above my lip! I'm growing my mustache!"
I think he may have a fair way to go before anything substantial happens.  At supper time he mentioned that he's hoping it'll come in bushy and orange just like Jamie Hyneman...Sure, Sean...Good luck with that.

Just as I was putting the last things on the supper table this evening Levi asked if he could sit down and I helped him up.  Then he asked if it was supper time and I said yes.  So he pipes right up and calls, "Children, supper time!"  So cute and funny!

The Great Outdoors!

The sun was shining so brightly this morning that after a shortened school day we ditched the books and headed for the great outdoors!

We headed over to the MacPhail Homestead and went for a trek through the woods.  The kids had a BLAST! They love climbing and running and enjoying the fresh fun of nature.  There was much yelling and laughing and engineering.  They were determined to make their way to a little island which required some fancy log work to get across the stream. With a quite a bit of splashing and laughing they all made it across.  Levi and I stayed on the mainland and watched their shenanigans.

This afternoon the kids and I are going to attempt to take out the trampoline! YAY!

A Fun Productive Day!

After I got my jump rope workout done (nearly halfway through the challenge) the kids and I sat down to do our school work.  We had a great morning.  We all really enjoyed our Canadian History reading as it sent us to the map to find MacKenzie River, Fraser River, Bella Coola and the Dean Channel. The one drawback to this study is my deep desire to just go visit these places! I would love to someday take the kids on a trip across Canada by train to visit all these places we've read about.

This afternoon while Levi napped the kids and I headed outside to tackle the yard-work.  We raked up lots of leaves and twigs into piles.  Sean was able to nip down to the Kent store and pick up some yard bags for us.  Then the kids were in charge of hauling each full bag over to the garage.  They had a great time working together and having fun with the wagon to load their cargo and head off to their destination.

Speaking of trains and destinations this is Levi's favourite book.  As soon as he finds it, he wants it read to him again and again!  This book was given to Sean on his 3rd birthday from his Auntie Linda. It's so nice to see it so well loved today.

Time to Play

Today we went down to the waterfront for some outdoor play time with our homeschool group.  The kids had a delightful time playing at the old train turn table.  The wind was a bit brisk off the water but the kids ran and jumped and imagined up many fun escapades.

Mr. Levi watching the others and looking oh so cute in his Canadian hat!

Recital Time

Sean and Emma-Lyn had their first recital this afternoon. They were a tad nervous and plenty excited! They both did a great job! So proud of them!

Paddle and Dabble

Today was a day of writing up lists and getting small projects done.  I did a bit more in organizing my cupboards and I thoroughly cleaned my stove top--that was a mess! Marko ran some errands with the kids and we attacked Mt. Laundry.

We even found time to slip out to Georgetown and try another burger.  We went to Clam Diggers to try their Diggers Classic.  It has an 8oz Seasoned Island Beef Patty, Boston Bib Lettuce, House-made Coleslaw, Fresh Sliced Tomatoes, Pickled Red Onions, Acidulated Cucumber, Candied Bacon, House-made Boursin Cheese, Smoked Gouda, House-made Tennessee-Style BBQ Sauce, Traditional Mustard, and Sriracha Aioli on a Classic Burger Bun grilled with Garlic Butter. It was a nice burger, plenty tasty if a bit messy.

The kids really wanted to play at the Georgetown public gardens but we needed to get Levi home for a nap.  Once he was down the kids and I headed back to Georgetown and they had a blast running around while I sat and crocheted in the car.  Just as we were leaving we happened to spy a mallard couple making their way to the pond. We  weren't able to get too close but enjoyed watching them paddle and dabble in the water.
You can barely see the couple on the right side of the pond.

And the Diggers Classic.

A Little Visitor

It was a busy and very productive day.  Not only did we get the house cleaned, I reorganized a bookshelf, cleaned out the fridge and reorganized a few of my kitchen cupboards.

In the midst of this Nate had a bit of a nasty fall and scraped up his knee pretty bad.  We got him cleaned up and settled in for some popcorn and watched  The Gruffalo. Nate was all cuddled up in blankets on the couch while the others found comfy spots on the floor.

After quiet time we had a little visit from my friend Laura and she had one of her baby goats with her.  The children were delighted to have a goat in the kitchen.  By the end of the visit Sean was trying to convince me that we needed a goat!

 Sean snuggling with the goat.

She was such a little sweetie pie!

Yard Work

This morning when I sent the kids outside they decided of their own volition that it was high time to start some yard clean up.

Levi enjoyed pushing this pink stroller about the yard while the older boys worked.

Playing at the Park

This afternoon after an early supper the kids and I went to the library and then to the park.  The kids had such a blast at the park.  It really feels like summer could be right around the corner!

 Always climbing!

"Hey Mom, wanna play tag with me?!"

A Quiet Homeschool Day

It was back to the normal routine today and the kids did a great job!  Everyone got their work done and without fussing.  Sean even went the extra mile and did his spelling list and his journal in cursive.  It's fun to watch the kids learn new skills and then apply them to other areas without being instructed.

And instead of a photo, I present you with a cute little video of Levi singing.  He kept moving around because he wanted to watch himself in the phone at the same time.

Tea Time and Poetry with Our Homeschool Group

The kids enjoyed a lovely morning complete with fancy hats, fancy tea cups and tasty treats.  And those who wanted to share a poem with the group had the opportunity to do so. Sean read a section of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" and Nate read Lewis Caroll's "Jaberwocky."

After our homeschool time we had a lovely playdate with the MacGregors. It was such a lovely sunny day that the kids spent most of their time playing in the backyard.

And this morning before our morning outing I went out on the deck and did 1500 jumps.  Not all at once mind you.  I had to take many breaks and catch my breath but it was fun and exhilarating!

Sean sharing "The Raven."

Me post jump rope time: happy but exhausted!

Snow Storm!

There is nothing quite like waking up April 10th and looking out your window at this:

Yep, must be spring in the Maritimes since the plows are still on the roads!  There was enough of the white stuff blowing around that our church services were canceled for the morning.  We read the Bible story instead and attempted to enjoy some family time.

Sadly we seemed to have gotten up on the cranky sides of our beds which made for a less than stellar beginning. Marko and the kids shoveled the driveway together while I napped.  I had a ridiculous headache that just wouldn't let up.

In the afternoon everything started to clear up.  The sun began to shine my headache subsided and I decided to take the kids on a walk.  It was a surprise walk--I knew where we were going but wouldn't tell the kids unless they guessed it.  Sean guessed it as we crossed the Montague bridge.  We were on our way to visit Jackie and the kids.  We knew they were back from Quebec and we were all very excited to see them again.

They weren't home when we knocked so we walked onward to Jackie's in laws and lo and behold we found them there.  We enjoyed a lovely visit and even got a ride back to our place.

For supper Marko made waffles for him and the kiddos while I prepared some mozza stuffed peppers for me. I put tuna, yogurt, pesto, avocado, celery and mozzarella cheese in my peppers.  It was yummy!

A Slow Saturday

We slept in this morning and then enjoyed a leisurely breakfast before getting anything substantial done.

I took the kids to the Chapel to do our cleaning while Marko worked on his sermon for tomorrow.  The kids and I also visited the library and enjoyed checking out some new books and videos.

When we came home Marko and I decided it would be nice to try another burger.  We headed over to Eden's Gate and enjoyed their Nor'easter which seems fitting as we're supposed to get some more snow tomorrow.

This little burger was ever so tasty!  It's made up of 8oz Island Beef Patty stuffed with Gooey Herbed Cheese, Chipotle Mango Mayo, Shredded Lettuce, Crunchy Onions, Homemade Dill Pickle Slices, Peppered Bacon, Smoked Cheddar & Mozza, BBQ-Ketchup Chips, and Bacon Jam on a Homemade Potato Bun. YUM, YUM and more YUM!!  I almost wanted to take one home for supper!

Tulips I received last night!  Can't wait for them to open up!  And look Rachel, your daisies are still going strong!

Ladies Night Out!

What a a fun evening!  I drove to town with a wonderful group of ladies from my church.  It was so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy their company as we drove to the Culinary for our fun evening.

A few of us first checked in with the ladies from Belle's Boutique to get our last minute instructions before the fashion show later in the evening.  Once we had that settled we all found a place to sit and connect with other ladies from all over the Island.

The Culinary put on a beautiful three course meal. Our appetizer was a delicious Yukon Gold Potato & Double Smoked Bacon Puree.  The main course was a delectable Chicken Breast stuffed with Bacon, Cambozola, Dried Fruit & Brioche served with a Mushoom Sauce.  And for dessert you could have a tasty chocolate brownie drizzled in sauce with berries or a lovely lemon tart with berries. They served a lovely punch as well.

We had a wonderful lady get up and share her testimony which was such a beautiful encouragement to me.  Then there was some special music which I had to miss as it was time to get ready for the runway so to speak.

What a hoot!  The fashion show was a BLAST!  The other ladies looked amazing in each of their outfits and we had a such a good time together!

After that we got to play a good rousing game of bowling...with pantyhose on your head with a ball in the toe.  So FUNNY!

Me and my mad bowling skills!

 Such a lovely meal!

And all the lovely ladies.  All of these pictures are courtesy of my lovely friend Alyson..who tried her very best to keep me contained throughout the evening!

Off to the Races

While I went to town for my dance class, Marko took the kiddos to the Awana Grand Prix.  The kids all had worked hard on their cars to get them ready for the race.  Marko also raced one of his antiques from back in his Awana days.  They all had a great time.  Marko's car made second place and Emma-Lyn's car placed third.

From left to right are: Sean's car, Nate's truck, Emma-Lyn's car and Marko's car.

Time to Break a Sweat

This morning I began a new fitness journey.  I've joined some friends and countless others from all over the world in a 30 day jump rope challenge.

It was a great first day if somewhat humbling.  I felt that I was a fairly fit person but this proved to me otherwise.  I am so wildly out of shape.  I had to take several breaks but I'm proud of myself for getting through the routine and pressing forward.

The kids were my cheerleaders during the routine and kept telling me I could do it.  I'm looking forward to the following workouts.  The challenge also included healthy choices for your meals which does mean some meal revamping.  While losing pounds and inches off my waistline would be great, my primary goal is to become a healthier and stronger me.

And stepdance lessons for adults starts back up this Thursday, so you know I have to take that back up again!

My new partners in crime--my jump rope and my dance shoes!

More Maps!!

When my folks were here this weekend they gave me these amazing maps plus a whole bunch more!  Can't wait to go exploring in these maps with the kids!

We were back into our books today and had a great day!  We covered all our subjects and Sean and I played a fraction game. Then, once we located all our overdue and soon to be overdue books we visited the library.

In the afternoon we had our read aloud and our history narration.  And we followed that up with watching  seven short stories about life in early Canada.  The kids LOVED the videos!  Great stories and ever so fascinating.

Our Visit to the Monastery

Today our homeschool group went to Little Sands to visit the Buddhist Monastery. It was very informative and interesting. We think it is a good idea to show our children not to fear other cultures but to understand them, not to hate them but to love the people.

The statue of Buddha in their prayer hall.

Such a Wonderful Visit

It was so very good to see my family again!  And we had such a delightful time together.  They headed out early this morning to avoid any nasty weather.  We were sorry to see them go so soon but totally understood the desire to get back to their own cozy home.

My mom can still hoop!  I love my mom!

And this evening we tried the Albatross from Peakes Tee. It's made up of 8oz Island Beef Patty, Homemade Chipotle Sauce, Swiss Cheese, Bacon, Cucumber, Red Onion, Shredded Cheddar Mix, Homemade Tangy Honey Sauce, and Ketchup on a Ciabatta Bun grilled with Garlic Butter.  It was tasty but not as good as the Shanghai Dragon.

Speaking of food...Uncle Max will be ever so delighted to learn that his childhood nickname lives on in my son Nate. It would seem that Uncle Max when he was young, was notorious for finishing everything on his plate and then asking others for the left overs on their plates.  Thus his loving family nicknamed him, "The Garbage Can."  Nate pretty near eats like a horse and enjoys asking his siblings for their crusts.  And a new Garbage Can is born!

Celebrating Easter...Again

The kids were in fine form this morning just rarin' to go and get Trooper to take her for her morning walk.  And afterwards Trooper was treated to a wonderful full belly massage!

My folks arrived a little after ten and we all trekked outside for some bubble time.  It was funny to watch Levi try to blow the bubbles.  He had much more fun just chasing bubbles around the backyard.

We decided to try another Burger Love offering for lunch and went with the Shanghai Dragon from the Lady Slipper Cafe.

This was a brilliant burger!! So delightfully tasty!  Here's what's in it: 8oz Island Beef Patty with Fresh Asian Glaze, Deep Fried Wonton Strips with Sweet Chili Sauce, Peameal Bacon, Swiss Cheese, and House-made Chinese Slaw on a Brioche Bun grilled with Butter, garnished with Pickled Ginger.  YUM!

After lunch it was time to run some errands. The boys went with Marko to get groceries while Emma-Lyn, Auntie Karina and I headed out to Belle's Boutique.  (Grampa stayed home to nap as did Levi)

The girls were going to Belle's because I had a fitting scheduled. I'm going to be part of a little fashion show at a church ladies night out event.  I was so excited going into the store and I loved the different outfits the owner of the shop picked out for me.  Then I stepped into the fitting room and thought, "What am I doing?!  I HATE trying clothes on..."  And the full length mirror was a little daunting as well.

I screwed up my courage and tried on the first dress and it was really cute and I didn't mind having to step out of the dressing room to get the opinions of the others. It was a hit, so it was on to the next few items.  And everything was going swell until I got to this glamorous shimmery blue number. It was gorgeous!

I got in on over my head...and then I got stuck...I could neither pull the dress down further or pull it back up. And the panic started to creep back in...yet another reason I should not be trying on clothes--my worst nightmare was coming true.  I was going to get stuck with a dress around my neck and have to go out and ask another adult to get me out... So embarrassing!

As my arms were flailing about and my sides were getting stitches in them I noticed there was a little zipper in the side of the dress. YAY!
Maybe now I can get it down.
Not so much...still stuck.
Maybe there was a little more zipper I could pull down a little harder.

There was a part of me that was  afraid that I might just rip the dress apart but thankfully the zipper went down and nothing tore while my arm finally went through the appropriate hole.

At this point I have the dress all scrunched up at my chest and my arms are dangling down in relief.  While this was a stunning dress on the hanger, it looked like a prom dress gone horribly wrong on me.  Time for a different outfit.

We ended up with three really sweet outfits and I'm looking forward to the ladies night out next week!

Later on Karina, Marko and I picked up a pipe connector and some hockey tape.  And when we came home we got out the PVC pipe from the garage and made Karina a hula hoop.  In the midst of this we were cooking a turkey dinner.   It was busy but fun to get everything ready for a lovely meal with my family.

After supper Marko headed out to games night, the kids watched a movie while my folks and I just chatted at the table.

Now my folks are in their cozy little cottage, my kids are sleeping and the house is quiet.  I have my favourite candle glowing, some quiet tunes playing and it's time to work on tomorrow's Sunday School lesson.

 Trooper enjoying her massage!

Love the little kid hand prints on the garage door.

 Learning to blow bubbles.

Catching a bubble on her wand.

Letting the wind do all the work.

 I love bubbles.

 The Shanghai Dragon.

Our pretty table awaiting the Easter dinner party.
