Would be the Monarch--which, sadly this is not. This is a Viceroy Butterfly:
Emma-Lyn found this specimen on our friend's car yesterday and we haven't had a real chance to investigate it yet. I pulled it out this evening to take a few pictures and even look at it under the microscope--so fascinating! I thought it was a Monarch at first but after a little research I discovered that this is a Viceroy. One way you can tell the difference is by the black line that runs across the veins on the hindwing, a Monarch doesn't have that line. Can't wait to share this with the kids!
Today we enjoyed being part of the Montague Days parade. We also helped out at the Awana booth at the waterfront. The kids loved filling the balloons with helium and then walking among the crowd to hand them out.
