Burger Love is BACK!

Woo Hoo!!  While the rest of the world will be ushering in the beautiful month of April, we on the Island are already celebrating the month we affectionately know as Burger Love!

And to kick things off my bestie Denise came over to partake of some beefy deliciousness with me!!  We totally enjoyed our La Fiestas from the Lady Slipper Cafe!  They were tasty if a whole lot messy as well.  Definitely a great start to the month!

Looking forward to more hangouts with friends and burgers and lots of laughs.

Introducing The Newest Member of Our Extended Family:

This is Mr. Daniel Jakob Geurms and he is the cutest little nephew an auntie and uncle could have!!  He was born six weeks early but he is doing amazing!  So proud and excited for this little guy and my sister and brother in law!!!  He was born Monday, March 13th.  Marko and I got to see him that evening and it was so delightful to meet this sweet little blessing.  I cannot wait to get to know him more and spoil him like a good auntie should.

 Such uber cuteness!

They are a beautiful family if somewhat difficult to get everyone looking the same way and even just to get some people to open their eyes!

 Oooo, the little booties!
 Such a sweet baby boy!

 Proud parents!!

Curling Jamboree

Today the boys enjoyed their last curling event.  It was a day long jamboree where they got to curl  and play some Just Dance as well as enjoy pizza and cake.  The kids all had a great time and for me it was nice to just chat with the other parents.

Their team came in second place.  They were quite pleased!

Games, Painting, Books and Beethoven

This morning we read our devotions and we read from our new read aloud, The Secret Benedict Society and The Prisoner's Dilemma.  I'm pretty sure that we've already read this book but the kids are adamant that we haven't and it's one of their favourite series so we're enjoying reading it again for the first time.  We also read a science book about forces before breaking out our new game called Flash Point.  The kids really enjoyed it and are looking forward to playing it again soon.  I do realize now that we made a few mistakes while we played but I think the kids will still have fun with it.

Such a neat game!  The boys also played a couple rounds of timelines as well.

After the game Emma-Lyn and Nate set to work painting a couple of masterpieces as seen below:

In the afternoon after quiet time we all headed outside for some outdoor fun.  Sean and I played a bit of frisbee and then we all decided to play some four square on the driveway.  All the while Levi amused himself with his toy car and the wagon.  I went back in the house to start supper and soon the kids were back in the house.  Nate played a little Minecraft before we all settled in the living room to watch a documentary about Beethoven.

This evening the older kids and I went to stepdance while Levi stayed home with daddy and got to go to bed early...We came home to this sweet scene:

His one arm is stuck between pages of his book and I had to gently extricate to avoid him waking himself up later on.  Such a sweet little sleepy head.

March Break

March break has hit the Island and the public schools are quiet while students and staff take some time off.  While we don't do March Break I have decided to take this week and just change it up a bit.  Things are more relaxed.  Instead of jumping into our regular basket time and then tackling subjects, we will be doing art, puzzles, more read alouds, reading science books together and watching documentaries.  And if the kids come up with some other things they'd like to explore then we'll see what we can do about that.

Today we got started with a puzzle that Sean picked up over the weekend. I had plenty of helpers at first but soon it was just me and Iginla piecing it together on the ice.  Sean did come back near the end and the two of us got mighty frustrated with the yellow on the boards.  The puzzle isn't the highest quality and was difficult to place correctly.
 Finished puzzle!!

Sean also decided to get some painting done. Sean and I worked on it together as he was getting frustrated trying to think of what to do next and not wanting to mess it up.

Levi was DESPERATE to paint so I got him set up and let him paint in one of my sketch pads.  HE LOVED IT!  As the other kids walked by he would exclain, "Hey look guys, I'm doing good!!"

Tomorrow there will be more painting and hopefully we'll play our new game Flash Point and a round or two of Timelines!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

When I was supposed to be cleaning the house I ended up engrossed in building this:

Sean had made the shamrock/cross and then I felt we should print the greeting and then Sean added the pot of gold...the house is still happily waiting for me to come clean it...

The End of the Curling Season

Yesterday afternoon the kids enjoyed the end of the year celebrations with the rest of the Junior Curlers.  Since the ice was having issues they played some curling themed games instead.  Instead of Duck, Duck, Goose they played Whoa, Whoa, Hurry Hard. There were cupcakes and other treats to eat and they received their awards.  Nate and Emma-Lyn both got a medal for being first year juniors and Sean accomplished his Red Level Skills Certificate.
Yummy cupcakes.  Levi was very pleased when he was offered one as well.

My happy goofy curlers.

Where Is Spring?!

It certainly does not feel like spring is just around the corner what with the high winds and snow and freezing rain going on!  Someday we'll get to actually enjoy green grass again and not just big puddles of red mud everywhere.

Yesterday the kids and I enjoyed some poetry and teatime at Nate's request.  We couldn't find any of our regular books of poems so we cracked open some new selections and were delighted with our finds.  I think we may have a few more favourites.

Today we finished reading aloud Caddie Woodlawn--we really enjoyed this book.  It has a similar feel to the Little House on the Prairie books. **Spoiler Alert** I was so hoping that their dog, Nero would come back and as I got to the pages and paragraphs describing his long trek home it was hard to hold back the tears! Such a great read.  Now to figure out what our next read aloud will be.

Team Shaw

The boys played their hearts out and had a great time on and off the ice.  They played some pretty tough, heartbreaking draws. Every time they were out on the ice they gave it their all.  I was so very happy and proud to take in their eleven o'clock game this morning.  They made some great shots but still couldn't find the win. That said, as they came off the ice they were still of good cheer.  As a parent it was wonderful to watch the teams play and listen to other parents applaud not only their own child's achievements but also the other team's abilities as well. Their final game was at six this evening and they won, 12-0.  Great way to finish their weekend.

This is Team Shaw from left to right we have: Sam Shaw-- Skip, Nate Shaw-- Mate, Sean --Second and Brody Quinn -- Lead and their coach Owen Collins.  Not only are these boys skilled curlers but they are also a wonderful group of boys who get along very well and enjoy their game to the max!  I am so proud of all of them and the parents that stand behind them rooting them on!

Curling Provincials

Sean headed off with his team this morning to Summerside for the Provincials.  He was pretty pumped!!

Unfortunately for Team Shaw they were not able to snag a win out of the two games they played today.  Hopefully they're getting a good night's rest and will be ready to hit the ice tomorrow morning.

Marko and I and the kids are headed up to watch and cheer on our team!!  If you're interested in checking out the live scores click on this link.

Spirolateral Fun!!

Today the kids and I enjoyed making math art in the form of spirolaterals.  I found the idea on a blog called What Do We Do All Day.  Basically we just made spirals out of the three times table.  We wrote out the products for the three times tables as such:

3, 6, 9 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30

From there we made it into a sequence of single digits by adding the two digits of each number together.

So 12 would be come 1+2=3 and so on until we see the pattern emerge which for the three times tables is: 3, 6, 9, 3, 6, 9...

Then it was time to grab our graph paper and pencils and set to work.  Our first line across was three squares long then we made a 90 degree turn to the right and drew a line six squares long and then turn right 90 degrees again and draw a line three squares long and keep going until you come up with this lovely shape:

The kids had fun colouring them in too!

Family Hymn Sing...The Dream--The Reality

Yesterday our church services were cancelled due to the inclement weather. So I thought it would be lovely, if in the evening after supper we sat in the living room to sing some favourite hymns.

In my dream were friends who lived near by popping in and all of us just basking in the glow of a family worship time together.  We would laugh, sing, pray and share life together. It would be sweet, inspiring and a definite memory keeper...

The reality:  I had the onset of a cold so scrap the friends popping in--don't need to share a cold with them.  Once we finally had everyone in the living room and ready to sing, Levi--The Pantsless Wonder-- began to cry and then howl as we sang together.  He. did. not. stop.  And yet we continued in our endeavor. And then one of the children had a full on melt down and we had to stop and regroup/rethink/retry.  We did manage to get things sorted and we all belted out our last two songs.

Sean tickling the ivories for us.

And the cuteness factor.

Provincials and Play Dates

Sean is ever so pumped to be officially going to the curling provincials this year!! He went last year as a sub but this year he is actually part of a team.  And a pretty darn good one at that! He was over the moon happy when his team as well as the other Montague teams got their own hoodies to wear for the provincials:
He is such a keener for curling!

The provincials are taking place in Summerside this year so he will be traveling with his team and staying overnight in a hotel room.  Some pretty fun stuff for an eleven year old boy!

On Thursday the kids and I enjoyed a delightful playdate with the Bueckerts.  These pictures were taken during snack time:

They are all in Awana and just started sharing verses and reciting verses together.  It was ever so sweet to listen to them.

Happy Birthday Dr.Seuss!

I hadn't planned on doing a Dr.Seuss birthday celebration today but when my Facebook feed started popping up the occasion, I thought, what the heck!!

The kids brought out all our Dr. Seuss books for our display while I dashed out to grab a small cake for the occasion.  We read a few of our favourite stories which included, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Scrambled Eggs Super! and The Sleep Book.

After our cake we worked on some fun silly Seussian sentences.  I think we'll have to do more fun sentences like that!
 Our books!

 Yummy cake!

 And our little sentences!
Always fun to find something or someone to celebrate during our school day!
